Discover Pescopennataro
Accommodation in Pescopennataro
Pescopennataro brings together a long tradition of stoneworking, buildings from different periods and natural features ranging from forest areas to visible geological formations. There are also trails, cross-country ski runs and climbing routes, each with its own characteristics. Cultural sites tell stories of craftsmanship and religious tradition; the landscape and activities appeal to other interests. This gives you the chance to explore the town through the themes that matter most to you on your trip.
Stoneworking and archaeological finds
The Museo Civico della Pietra “Chiara Marinelli” houses more than 1,600 flint and limestone artefacts. It presents the Pescopennataro tradition of stoneworking, for which an artistic school of stonemasons emerged from around 1700. This brings the materials and local craftsmanship together in a shared context.
The finds in the Museo della Pietra “Chiara Marinelli” include archaic tools from the Lower Palaeolithic and particularly finely crafted tools from the Neolithic. The time gap between these groups makes it possible to compare different prehistoric toolmaking traditions. The museum’s focus therefore ranges from local stoneworking to much earlier forms of tool production.
Churches, gateway and procession
The Chiesa madre di S. Bartolomeo Apostolo dates from 1654. The Porta Di Sopra is a medieval arched gateway in Pescopennataro. The Madonna delle Grazie offers a different architectural feature: the church has a single nave, but its design creates the illusion of three naves. These buildings bring together different forms and periods, though they do not all share the same architectural history.
The Eremo di San Luca is located in a limestone cave at an altitude of about 1,500 metres above sea level. It is associated with an annual procession: on 10 September, the image is brought from the hermitage to Pescopennataro; on 18 October, it is carried back to the Eremo on foot. The set dates and the different directions give the religious tradition a distinct annual rhythm.
Forests and geological formations
The Pescopennataro area includes the two Sites of Community Importance, Bosco della Vallazzuna and Bosco degli Abeti Soprani. There is a network of nature trails there. In the surrounding area, silver firs grow alongside spruces, beeches and downy oaks. For orientation, the nature trails within the area are distinct from the forest landscapes described in the surrounding area.
The “faglie trascorrenti di Pescopennataro” geosite is a geological point of interest. It includes visible examples of strike-slip faults along the rock faces in the western part of the built-up area. Together with the forests and nature trails, it offers a natural theme that encompasses both vegetation and geological formations.
Trails and outdoor activities
The historic “Ateleta-Biferno” tratturo crosses the Pescopennataro area and reflects the route’s pastoral history. In the Bosco dell’Impero pine forest, the Parco di Pinocchio runs past sculptures depicting scenes from Pinocchio’s life. There is also a cycle path in Parco La Mandra.
The S2 La Morgia–Abeti Soprani trail is 3.1 kilometres long, has a low difficulty level and can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The limestone walls of Pescopennataro offer mainly single-pitch climbing routes, with grades ranging from 4 to 7. For the S2, its length, difficulty level and permitted ways of getting around provide guidance; for climbing, the single-pitch format and grades are the main points of comparison. Check route information locally before setting out.
There are cross-country ski runs near Pescopennataro in the localities of La Pescara and La Gallina; some of the runs are in La Pescara. They add another kind of activity to the range of trail and climbing options.
The Sorgenti del Rio Verde
The Sorgenti del Rio Verde are located not far from the town centre. There is oligomineral water, an equipped picnic area and a refreshment point. As visitor facilities can change, check whether the picnic area and refreshment point are available before your visit.
