Chiauci: Museum, History and Forest Landscape
Accommodation in Chiauci
Chiauci combines a historic center with a museum of rural culture and a forest-rich landscape. Several specific themes can help you choose this destination: narrow lanes and houses built from local stone, the Church of S. Giovanni Evangelista, traces of fortifications, springs and Cerris Park. You can weigh up whether local history, architectural styles or the landscape should play a greater role in your travel plans.
Townscape and History
Narrow lanes and houses built from local stone shape Chiauci’s historic center. Its history includes Norman origins; as a fief of the Count of Molise, the town was called Clà vicia. The fortified section could be accessed through three gates; its inner street is called Via Tre Porte. Parts of the old defensive walls are still visible. Palazzo Baronale recalls the town’s fortified medieval past and is surrounded by walls that originally had three large entrance gates.
Museum and Church
In the historic center, the Museo della civiltĂ contadina di Chiauci was established by restoring two buildings donated to the municipality. Many of the objects on display were donated by residents. The institution and a large part of the collection therefore have a direct connection to the community: one through the restored buildings, the other through the origins of the objects.
The Church of S. Giovanni Evangelista was built in 1724 with three naves. It has a circular tower. The reference to three naves describes the building’s layout; the circular tower is a separate feature of its architectural design. Together, the museum and church offer different cultural points of reference: a collection devoted to rural culture on the one hand, and datable church architecture on the other.
Forests, Water and a Historic Route
Chiauci is surrounded by forests of Turkey oak, fir, beech and pine. The landscape around the town also includes cliffs reflected in the artificial lake formed by the dam, with the mountains of Abruzzo in the background. The composition of the forest and the view across the lake offer different landscape motifs: tree species alongside a setting of cliffs, water and mountains. The Chiauci area has more than 40 springs.
A historic route also helps to put the town in context: the old Castel di Sangro–Lucera tratturo passes through Chiauci. It adds a cultural and historical reference to the natural features, setting it apart from the forests, springs and rock formations described above.
Cerris Park and Choosing a Hotel
Cerris Park adventure park is located in the municipality of Chiauci, in Bosco di Sant’Onofrio. It was the first adventure park to open in the province of Isernia. The park’s wooded area has a picnic area with tables and grills, a parking lot within the grounds, and restrooms. Confirm the availability of these facilities with the operator before your visit.
Then compare specific hotel offers based on the location, amenities and availability listed for each one.
