San Pietro Avellana offers several starting points for planning your trip: truffle hunting, forest trails, archaeological traces and traditional crafts. When looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose your focus according to whether you are particularly interested in truffles, nature, history or stargazing.

Truffle traditions and events

At the Museo del Tartufo, the tradition of searching for truffles with a dog in the forest is presented as a guided, multisensory experience. This draws attention not only to truffles as a culinary topic, but also to the search itself and its connection with the forest.

The 36th Summer Fair for Black Truffles, held on 9 and 10 August 2025, featured stalls selling high-quality black truffles, menus with black truffles, guided tours, tastings and musical performances. This edition is in the past and describes the programme at the time.

Hiking trails and landscape

The hike on Monte Miglio follows a trail through a beech forest to the Eremo di Sant’Amico. The hermitage is located in the forest of the same name, northeast of San Pietro Avellana. Monte Miglio is also home to a Samnite fortification, another historical link to the mountain.

Another route is the Tratturo Celano-Foggia. It starts in San Pietro Avellana on Corso Regina Margherita, at an elevation of 978 metres above sea level, and heads towards Monte Ingotta. The historic forest della Ficora also lies in the landscape along the route. Trail and vegetation conditions can change, so check them before your hike.

San Pietro Avellana lies on the Apennine watershed. The Rio stream rises in its territory and flows into the Sangro, which empties into the Adriatic Sea. The Vandra River is a tributary of the Volturno, which flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The two waterways therefore belong to different river systems and flow towards different seas.

Crafts and history

Traditional weaving is still practised in San Pietro Avellana. Colourful blankets are made using old methods, an example of a craft that continues in the town. Another historical trace is preserved in the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul: a parchment document from 1548 depicting Saint Benedict and Saint Amico. In the town, you can encounter both a living craft tradition and a tangible record from the 16th century.

Stargazing and other insights

The Osservatorio Astronomico di San Pietro Avellana offers observing evenings that include a visit to the planetarium, real-time image projections and direct observation of the sky through a telescope. Booking and operating details may change, so check them before your visit. The Museo dell’Alto Molise also offers a virtual tour of its exhibition spaces. These are different ways to explore a range of topics, from observing the night sky directly to taking a digital museum tour.
