Macchiagodena: Nature, Castle and Polenta
Accommodation in Macchiagodena
Macchiagodena offers tangible starting points for a trip: the Vallefredda Valley and its natural landscapes, the Castle and its architectural history, archaeological remains, and traditional polenta dishes. If you are looking for a hotel in Macchiagodena, you can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most.
Landscape and nature in Vallefredda
The Vallefredda Valley in Macchiagodena features conifer plantations, coppice woodland, rocky cliffs, grazing slopes and moisture-loving vegetation. Forest, rock, open slopes and wetter areas are among the valley’s varied landscape features. The Vallefredda area lies within the La Montagnola Site of Community Importance (SCI) and is part of a LIPU reserve.
The Matese massif shapes the landscape around Macchiagodena, which is why the town is also known as “Terrazza sul Matese” (“Terrace over the Matese”). From the Sentiero LIPU – Rio Secco, the panoramic view stretches from the Matese to the Mainarde. The trail offers an easy nature walk in the LIPU reserve that is accessible to everyone.
The Riserva naturale Rio Secco e Piana Palomba nature reserve is open and can be visited year-round. A total of 98 bird species have been reported there, including the red kite, peregrine falcon and common raven. This brings together distinct nature-related features: landscape, an explicitly easy walk and reported bird species.
The Castle and archaeological remains
The Castello di Macchiagodena preserves the bases of its polygonal curtain walls, as well as two sturdy towers built from exposed, dressed stone blocks. The structure existed by the Angevin period at the latest. A small triangular fort was later extended and converted into a residential palace. The castle grounds also contain a large stone lion dating from the 13th century.
Near the Valle Fredda spring, an Italic temple stands in the territory of Macchiagodena, at a branch of the Tratturello Pescasseroli-Candela. An extensive settlement is located at Capoccia, where roof tiles and glossy black pottery of the Campana A type have been found. The temple and settlement remains are two distinct archaeological features of the area.
Reading culture and local cuisine
Since 2016, Macchiagodena has been the national headquarters of the Associazione Nazionale Borghi della Lettura. That same year, the municipality set up the open-air library “La Terrazza della Lettura” in the main square below the medieval Castle. A description from January 2022 notes that visitors could read there, as well as take books and return them. If you would like to include the library in your trip plans, check its current accessibility in advance.
Macchiagodena’s traditional cuisine includes polenta in two varieties: the red version is made with sausage and peppers, while the white version is made with salt cod and onions. In Polenta e Baccalà , the spoonful-sized portions of polenta are called “fattaruoli”. The two varieties therefore differ both in color and in their accompaniments.
