Urbino’s historic centre showcases Renaissance architecture in a striking combination with its natural setting and medieval predecessor. Almost completely preserved walls with bastions shape the cityscape, along with the Ducal Palace, the cathedral, the Santa Chiara Monastery and a complex network of oratories. Urbino is considered a pinnacle of Renaissance art and architecture. The historic centre is in the Province of Pesaro e Urbino in the Marche region.

Renaissance Art and Culture

The buildings give a visit to Urbino a clear focus: the walls and bastions, religious architecture and the Ducal Palace are not separate chapters, but parts of a shared Renaissance heritage. The harmony between architecture, the natural setting and the medieval predecessor is also part of Urbino’s distinctive character. If you would like to include a musical theme alongside architecture, Pesaro is home to the Museo Nazionale Rossini. It is located on the piano nobile of Palazzo Montani Antaldi. Ten rooms document the life of Gioachino Rossini and his extensive operatic output.

Another archaeological highlight is the Bronzi Dorati da Cartoceto: this gilded bronze group from Roman times is the only one of its kind to have survived to the present day. The archaeological site of Colombarone, on the ancient Via Flaminia, is also located in the Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo. The destination’s cultural appeal thus ranges from Renaissance buildings to Roman history, although these subjects belong to different periods and places.

Coast, Landscapes and Birdlife

The Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo has a striking cliff-lined coast on the Adriatic Sea. Its highest elevations are at the hills of San Bartolo and Castellaro, and near Casteldimezzo and Fiorenzuola di Focara. The park is also an important area for bird migration and the wintering of various bird species. Its coastal landscape and birdlife offer different points of interest for nature enthusiasts.

If you are considering a walking route, you can follow Itinerario 2: it runs from Fiorenzuola di Focara through the village of Casteldimezzo to Tetto del Mondo. Check trail conditions and access before setting out. Nature excursions, motorboat trips, festivals and cultural tours are also organised in the park; programmes and dates vary by season.

The Parco Naturale Interregionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello offers a different kind of landscape. The protected area covers 4,791 hectares and lies in the provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and Rimini. A trail in the Sasso Simone area runs entirely through the forest. Large boulders that have slid down the slopes give it a fairytale atmosphere. Please note that park or military-area notices may affect access to the trail.

Activities and Regional Discoveries

In the Acqualagna area, the CEA Furlo e Valle del Metauro offers activities including archaeological trekking. Check in advance whether the programme is currently available. Acqualagna is also known as the truffle capital of the Marche; trekking, cycling and birdwatching are possible in the Furlo State Nature Reserve. In Urbania, the Bosco dei Folletti nature and fantasy trail is aimed at schools and families: the route is about 1,500 metres long and offers guided educational visits. Goblin statues and their little houses tell the story of a fantasy family there. For this activity too, it is advisable to check whether the programme is currently available.

For cycling and walking, the Pesaro–Fano route is another option: it follows a dedicated track and is well signposted. Conditions and signage may change. An official provincial tourist map presents eight themed routes: the sea, gentle hills and ancient villages, parks and nature, culture, regional products, Roman heritage, family activities and events. Printed copies in Italian and English are available at the IAT tourist information centres in Pesaro, Urbino, Fano and Gabicce Mare; check local conditions before travelling.

Olive Oil and Seasonal Traditions

A discovery route through the olive-growing landscape of the Marche starts in Sassocorvaro Auditore, near Lago di Mercatale. The town is known for producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil and is surrounded by extensive olive groves. Here, the landscape and regional product tradition are directly linked.

In Gradara, the “Il Medioevo a Tavola” initiative is dedicated to medieval cuisine. Throughout the year, it organises themed days when the town’s restaurants are transformed into 15th-century taverns. Exact dates and participating venues vary. In Urbania, the Festa della Befana is a long-standing family event; its exact programme may also vary from year to year.

For seasonal events and guided activities, check the dates or current programme availability. This will help you plan your stay around the themes that interest you most at the destination.
