Piobbico offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: cultural history centred on Castello Brancaleoni, trails to historic sites, and a landscape shaped by rivers and rock formations. Biscubio and Candigliano meet in the centre of the settlement. The sights in the town and destinations in the surrounding area offer different points of interest.

Castello Brancaleoni and Earlier Building History

Castello Brancaleoni is an important aristocratic residence in the Marche region. It stands as a symbol of the power of the Brancaleoni family, which ruled the area for centuries, and of Piobbico’s art, history and shared identity. The Museo Civico Brancaleoni, founded in 1983, is housed in the 13th-century castle. At the foot of the castle stands the Chiesa di San Pietro in Piobbico; its history dates back at least to the 14th century.

Another historic landmark lies high above Piobbico: the structures of the Brancaleoni family’s original residence stood on a peak in the Monte Nerone massif. It was known as Castello di Mondellacasa. This earlier site represents a different part of the family’s history from Castello Brancaleoni in the town.

River Landscape and Views in the Surrounding Area

Deep, narrow gorges carved by the Candigliano shape the landscape around Piobbico. Fast-flowing water forms channels and rock walls there. Small streams, waterfalls and still pools, reflecting the surrounding forests, can also be found along the waterways. The rocky gorges and quieter waters offer contrasting impressions of the regional landscape.

Southeast of the town, the Santuario di Santa Maria in Val d’Abisso sits on a hill. From there, views extend across a rugged area of Monte Nerone and to the Balza Forata rock formation. Also nearby, Castello dei Pecorari features partially preserved medieval architectural elements, visible sections of wall and towers. From there, there are views of the Candigliano Valley and the town of Piobbico.

Trails and Historic Destinations

A trail leads up a slope of about half an hour to the ruins of the Eremo di Morimondo in the surrounding area. A Gothic arch remains visible there. The Eremo’s history dates back to the 11th century: Cistercians who followed the Rule of Saint Pier Damiani founded the hermitage. The trail and its founding story offer two different perspectives on the site.

The Itinerario dei Brancaleoni starts at Palazzo Brancaleoni in Piobbico and descends towards Borghetto and the bridge over the Candigliano. Several viewpoints along the route look out over Borghetto, Castello Brancaleoni and the Candigliano. The route description thus brings together views of the town and its buildings with the river valley, while the viewpoints each offer a different focus.

Crafts, Traditions and Dates

The local culture includes a traditional craft history of wool carpet making. The events calendar also reflects local traditions. Piobbico’s Processione delle Rocche traditionally takes place on 8 September: girls in peasant dress carry decorated spindles as offerings to the Virgin at the Santuario di Santa Maria in Val d’Abisso. The programme may vary from year to year.

The annual Sagra del Polentone alla Carbonara celebrates a typical dish from peasant tradition, made with polenta, meat and local spices. The exact event dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the dates and programme for the relevant year. When looking for a hotel in Piobbico, you can also consider whether local history, views along the trails or a local tradition is the main focus of your trip.
