Carpegna combines a distinctive landscape with a diverse cultural history. When planning a stay, visitors can explore its forests and trails as well as its historic buildings, museums and traditional crafts. The attractions range from nature trails to an archaeological site with clearly restricted access.

Forests, Ridges and Trails

The limestone massifs of Sasso Simone and Simoncello reach a height of about 1,200 metres. They lie in a landscape of forests, pastures and deeply eroded clay badlands. The area of Sasso Simone and Simoncello was declared a nature park in 1994 and is home to numerous rare plants and animals.

There are numerous trails in the Carpegna area for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. A trail to the Sassi starts at Cantoniera di Carpegna and leads through the forest. These are distinct from the nature trails that start at Carpegna Park: the park lies at the foot of Monte Carpegna, where the Parco Sasso Simone e Simoncello nature reserve begins. The routes there include Trail No. 118 to the base of Sasso Simone and Simoncello.

Carpegna Park’s Adventure Park also offers outdoor activities. It features twelve courses in a downy oak forest. These include climbing sections, zip lines, elevated walkways and Tibetan bridges, as well as a cycling feature that runs between the trees. This offers different ways to get around, without requiring visitors to follow a particular route or maintain a particular pace.

Fortified City and Palazzo

The fortified city of Città del Sole was conceived by the Medici in the spring of 1554. It was completely abandoned about ten years after it was built. The archaeological site can be reached only on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. If you include it in your plans, this access restriction is an important practical difference from the area’s other cultural attractions.

The Palazzo dei Principi di Carpegna tells a different architectural story: work began on 30 April 1674 with the excavation of the foundations. The Palazzo is considered a palatial fortress and was inspired by fortified Florentine-style villas. The combination of its fortress-like character and villa forms gives the building a distinctive architectural identity.

Museums, Church and Crafts

The Museo dei Borghi is housed in the deconsecrated Church of S. Maria della Misericordia in Castacciaro di Carpegna. Its visual, tactile and audio exhibits convey the rural setting, activities and farming life of Carpegna’s fifteen hamlets. The Museo della Pineta in the village of Cippo, by contrast, is housed in a former forestry lodge. Interactive displays explore the forest of Monte Carpegna, including animal calls, animal tracks and plant layers. The two museums therefore focus on different subjects: life in the hamlets and the natural world of the mountain forest.

The Geoteca della vallata di Carpegna is devoted to the valley’s geological history. Painted reconstructions and exhibits such as shell fossils, sea urchins and minerals illustrate the subject. Another cultural stop is the 12th-century Romanesque Pieve di San Giovanni Battista. It lies just over two kilometres from the centre of Carpegna, on the border with the municipality of Frontino, and is considered one of the oldest church buildings in the park area and throughout the Montefeltro region.

Traditional crafts are also part of Carpegna’s cultural identity: for six generations, the Antica Stamperia Carpegna has been printing fabrics by hand, using wooden blocks and traditional rust-coloured dye. This focus differs from the exhibitions on landscape and history, offering a glimpse into a continuing craft tradition.

Cycling and Route History

For cycling enthusiasts, La salita del Pirata starts in the centre of Carpegna. Marco Pantani rode the route and used Carpegna’s climbs to prepare for his victories. Alongside the many mountain biking trails, this connection highlights another facet of the region. The attractions mentioned vary in character, from nature trails and a specific cycling route to historical and craft-related themes.
