Smirra on the Burano: Via Flaminia and traces of culture
Accommodation in Smirra
Smirra lies on the left bank of the Burano along the old Via Flaminia between Acqualagna and Cagli. The themes that help place the town in context include archaeological traces, bridges and mills, as well as the landscape of the Burano Valley. This can help you decide whether Smirra is right for a stay focused on history, geography or outdoor activities.
The Burano and the valley’s history
Above the bridge in Smirra, the Burano forms a bend in the river. Willows grow by the water, while trees densely cover the banks. Geological deposits also shape the description of the valley: the Smirra area has terraced alluvial deposits from the Upper Pleistocene, as well as younger deposits from the Holocene. “Alluvial” refers to material deposited by water; the dates place the deposits in different geological epochs. This means the valley can be understood not only through its present-day river course, but also through its long history of formation.
Roman finds and historic roads
Remains of walls, opus spicatum floors and a column fragment were found in the Caselle-Muracci area of Smirra. The finds probably belonged to a Roman villa rustica. Opus spicatum refers to a herringbone floor pattern and adds an architectural detail to the evidence of walls and columns. On the hill known as Il Casalino, remains are interpreted as a defensive stronghold or tower; their dating is general and refers to the post-classical period.
At the edge of town is a passageway of the Via Flaminia, considered the best-preserved passageway on the Marche section of the road. The Ponte di Smirra crosses the Burano at the settlement. Two tall limestone piers from the old bridge remain beside the new reinforced-concrete bridge. The road over the Ponte leads towards Pigno and Monte Martello. These details distinguish the historic route along the Via Flaminia from the surviving bridge remains, while also providing directions to the places mentioned.
Mills and engineering structures
The Smirra hydroelectric plant was built in 1911. On the Burano, it includes a 40-metre-long weir made partly of masonry and partly of wood. The construction year, length and combination of materials provide specific points of reference for the town’s engineering history.
The Mulino di Smirra is another historic structure by the river. It is a large, multi-part stone building described as being out of operation, with various architectural elements still preserved. The mill was also known as the Mulino del Ceppo. The two structures can therefore be distinguished: the hydroelectric plant is associated with a specific construction year and a weir made from a mix of materials, while the mill is notable for its multi-part stone construction and traditional alternative name.
Church and local routes
The parish church of San Severo in Smirra is officially called Parrocchia San Severo in Smirra. A road branches off from Smirra towards Pigno, where the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Stelle in Monte Martello is located. The Municipality of Cagli built the sanctuary around a votive shrine in 1495. Alongside traces associated with the Roman and medieval periods, the town’s history also includes religious architecture and connections to the surrounding routes.
Routes and opportunities for sport
The Cammino dei Cappuccini has an alternative route that descends to Smirra if the crossing of the Fosso Screbia is impassable. This condition matters when planning your route; check the current route before relying on it. Another route leads from Smirra to the left, across the Burano, and crosses the stream by an old mill.
An outdoor sports area has been open since 20 July 2024 at Parco Giochi di Smirra on Via Flaminia Nord. It is maintained and managed by the Municipality of Cagli. CorriSmirra is another event with a clearly specified date: the 41st edition, scheduled for 1 November 2025, featured a 10.1-kilometre race. Earlier editions in Smirra di Cagli were the 37th in 2019 and the 40th in 2024. If you plan to time a future trip around a race, check the date before making plans.
