Taino combines a central public park with historic religious buildings and trails through woodland and cultivated landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel in Taino, park design, cultural heritage and hiking trails offer different points of reference when choosing your destination. The sights and routes each have a distinct focus: from an artistically designed park and traces of local history to trails through forests, terraces and vineyards.

Park Design and Light Phenomena

Parco di Taino is a public park in the center of town. Giò Pomodoro designed it between 1981 and 1991. From there, you can see Lake Maggiore and Monte Rosa. The park and the view offer two different points of interest: the design of a public space and views of the named landscape features.

The path of sunlight plays an important role at the Luogo dei quattro punti cardinali. On June 21, sunlight passes through a slit in the central high pillar and projects light onto the fallen pillar. The interplay of shadows also marks the winter solstice and the spring and autumn equinoxes. The work thus connects a specific calendar date with seasonal markers. If you are interested in art related to the sun and shadows, you can consider these two aspects separately.

Local History and Religious Buildings

The Museo di Taino displays documents, photographs and tools relating to earlier trades in three display cases: carpenter, shoemaker, stonemason and tailor. The various objects provide tangible points of reference for these occupations. The name of the parish church, Santo Stefano Protomartire, is also closely associated with the town: it is known as “il dumin.”

In Cheglio stands the Oratorio di S. Giovanni Battista, a 17th-century chapel built according to the guidelines established by S. Carlo Borromeo. The Oratorio also houses a large painting of the beheading of John the Baptist. In 1992, art critic Giovanni Testori attributed it to the painter G.B. Crespi, known as Il Cerano. The Cappelletta dei Santi Cosma e Damiano in Cheglio offers a different point of historical interest: it was built in the 9th century and preserves remnants of frescoes from the Syrian school. The construction date and fresco fragments distinguish this chapel’s history from that of the Oratorio.

Hiking Trails Through Woodland and Cultivated Landscapes

The Anello delle Castagne runs between Sesto Calende and Taino, mostly along trails through the woodlands of Parco del Ticino. Oaks, chestnuts, hornbeams and Scots pines grow there. The circular route is listed as 13 kilometers long, taking 3 hours and 30 minutes, with a moderate difficulty level. As route specifications may change when trail maintenance is updated, check the details before setting out.

In Taino, the Sentiero del Verbano leads to old agricultural terraces, vineyards and chestnut woods. These offer different landscape features side by side: the Anello delle Castagne is characterized mainly by woodland trails, while the Sentiero del Verbano also passes through agricultural terraces and vineyards.

Another circular route is called the Anello Sesto Calende – Taino – Lisanza – Sesto Calende. It passes a former powder magazine whose explosion in the 1930s claimed the lives of 35 workers, mostly women. This historical connection sets the route apart from a hike focused solely on the landscape.
