Ispra: Harbor, Walks and Culture
Accommodation in Ispra
When looking for a hotel in Ispra, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Boat services, walking opportunities, local history and a science visitor centre offer different starting points for planning your trip. The following places and activities show what Ispra has to offer culture lovers, walkers and visitors interested in science and cycling culture.
Harbor and Walks
In summer, Ispra’s harbor has an active landing stage for boats and hydrofoils operated by Navigazione Lago Maggiore. Boat services are therefore a seasonal aspect of trip planning. If you would like to include them in your stay, check the timetable before setting off.
The Anello delle Fornaci circular trail starts and ends at the Info Point Ispra. Morning guided walks are also planned for 2026, including “Ispra e le sue fornaci,” covering approximately 5 km. The two options offer different ways to plan a day of walking: the Anello has a specified start and end point, while the morning departure and approximate distance provide useful planning details for the guided tour.
Churches, Gardens and Historic Traces
The complex of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Martino consists of two churches built in the 17th and 18th centuries, respectively. The older church faces the lake, while the new façade faces the square. The two parts therefore differ both in when they were built and in their orientation. The freely accessible garden of Villa Castelli is also in the town centre and offers another place to visit, with its landscaped grounds.
At Le Fornaci, individual remains of varying condition have been preserved as examples of industrial archaeology. The town’s history also reaches back to the Iron Age: extensive and clear traces of permanent settlement have been discovered in Ispra. The population groups are attributed to the so-called Golasecca culture. Altars, Serizzo urns and plaques bearing Latin inscriptions have also been preserved in the park and at Villa Sagramoso-Brivio. Industrial archaeological remains, traces of settlement and specific objects thus offer different ways to explore the town’s history.
Science and Cycling Culture
The Europa Science Experience is a visitor centre at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra. Its two main areas have different focuses: The Cube is a glass-enclosed space devoted to the history and role of the JRC in the European Commission. Another exhibition area features virtual encounters with scientists and virtual reality experiences. Visitors interested in science can therefore find both an institutional and an interactive perspective here.
Pedalarcultura offers another distinct focus. Launched in 2010, the event series is dedicated to cycling culture and cycle tourism. In 2026, La Bottega del Romeo is organizing it in Ispra once again, under the patronage of the Municipality of Ispra. If you would like to combine your trip with this programme, check the specific event dates for 2026.
