Cislago brings together a natural area and a multifaceted architectural and local history. The Parco del Bosco del Rugareto also extends into the municipal area; churches, connections to the castle and the Garden Museo Equestre offer further specific points of interest. If you are planning a stay, you can explore the town through both its protected area and its art, architecture and historic vehicles.

Nature Conservation and Castle History

The Parco del Bosco del Rugareto is a protected area of intermunicipal interest and also extends into Cislago. Another green space with a historical connection is Parco comunale della Repubblica: the present-day park lies beyond the gate and was once the garden of Castello Visconti Castelbarco. The castle itself is not open to visitors; its present structure dates from the 17th century. The Oratorio Visconteo dates back to the 14th century and was founded as the feudal lord’s family chapel.

Churches and Architectural Forms

The layout and decoration of the Chiesa della Beata Vergine Annunciata are defined by several specific features: the plan is square, the interior has a single nave, and the apse is rectangular; there is also a small bell gable. Pointed-arch windows, a rose window, terracotta and hanging arches on the façade are features of Lombard Gothic architecture. 14th-century frescoes depict Saint Anthony the Great and Saint Martin.

The Chiesa di San Giulio has an octagonal plan and neoclassical decoration. Cislago is therefore home to different architectural forms: the octagon defines the plan of San Giulio, while the Annunciata has a square plan. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta contains paintings by Lampugnani and Fiammenghino.

Historical Details and Frescoes

The bell tower of the Chiesa parrocchiale di S. Maria Assunta has a square plan and is dated to the 12th or 13th century; an inscription bears the date 1492. Behind the main altar are a monumental organ in a 17th-century case and a gallery. The organ’s present position in the apse is not its original one.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Iniziata also brings together different artistic and historical periods. According to the oldest documents, it was already in existence by the end of the 15th century. Five frescoes in the niches along the side walls are attributed to GianGiacomo Lampugnani. The presbytery contains a cycle dated 1615, comprising three scenes: the Visitation, the Birth of Mary and the founding of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.

Historic Vehicles and Luigi Monza

The Garden Museo Equestre is set amid greenery in the hamlet of Massina. Its collection includes more than 60 historic carriages, wagons, sledges and Surki carts. It is housed in a covered area of approximately 1,000 square metres. The museum is also accessible to people with mobility impairments.

Another connection to the town’s history is Luigi Monza, who was born in Cislago on June 22, 1898, to a farming family. Casa Beato Luigi Monza was one of the farmhouses in the immediate vicinity of the castle where the Monza family lived for several years. Don Luigi and the Little Apostles founded the association La Nostra Famiglia.
