Tradate: Trails, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Tradate
Tradate brings together a range of attractions that can shape a stay in different ways: trails in Parco Pineta, astronomical facilities, art and architectural history, and the local winemaking tradition. If you are looking for a hotel in Tradate, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. If nature and outdoor activities are your priority, the various trails are a good place to start; for a culture-focused stay, art and history offer a distinct focus.
Nature Trails and Astronomy
The Osservatorio astronomico complex includes the main dome and the educational observatory, which has permanently installed auxiliary telescopes. It also includes the Sentiero Natura, an orienteering course, a sensory trail and the EcoPlanetario. The attractions therefore include not only astronomical facilities but also nature and orienteering. If you want to choose a specific focus for your trip, you can weigh up astronomy against activities related to nature and orienteering.
Parco Pineta di Appiano Gentile e Tradate is characterised by Scots pines and English oaks in its woodland, as well as orchids and dog violets in its meadows. These plants are characteristic of two distinct landscape features in the park: the tree-filled woodland and the meadows with their flowering plants. The Sentiero dei quattro elementi FATA is an approximately 1 km-long trail in Parco Pineta at Via Ronchi 75 in Tradate. The Sentiero FATA features four installations representing fire, water, earth and air. The 250-metre-long Sistema Solare trail also runs through the woodland of Parco Pineta. The trails differ considerably in length and theme: the four elements contrast with the solar system.
Comparing Walking Times
The Sentiero 542: Binago/Tradate is accessible on foot and is rated from tourist to hiking difficulty; its stated walking time is 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Variante 543 B: Appiano Gentile/Tradate is an easy walking trail with a stated walking time of 45 minutes. This gives you a longer and a shorter option for planning your time, with a difference of 1 hour and 45 minutes between the walking times. The ratings also differ: the Sentiero 542 ranges from tourist to hiking difficulty, while the Variante 543 B is rated tourist. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Art, Museums and Architectural History
The Museo Fisogni della Stazione di Servizio is a private museum founded by entrepreneur Guido Fisogni in 1966. The Santuario del Santo Crocifisso offers a different cultural attraction: its interior features frescoes by Morazzone and Pietro Cortellezzi, as well as a three-colour marble floor and gilded stucco work. The decor combines painting, marble and stucco and can be appreciated through its varied artistic details.
Architectural history is also on display: parts of the ancient walls of Palazzo Castello - Pusterla Melzi can be seen on Via Barbara Melzi. The walls offer a different way to explore architectural history than the interior of the Santuario: they are visible on Via Barbara Melzi, while the frescoes, marble and stucco mentioned above are inside the sanctuary.
Tradate’s Winemaking Tradition
The local winemaking tradition dates back to the end of the 9th century. Tradate produced red and white wines until the 19th century, when a parasite decimated the vineyards. The Vigneto Didattico Comunale was established in June 2009 to revive the old tradition. The timeline therefore spans a winemaking history lasting many centuries, a setback caused by the parasite and the later municipal project. The reference to red and white wines specifies the products of the town’s earlier wine production.
