Discover Tronzano Lago Maggiore
Accommodation in Tronzano Lago Maggiore
Tronzano Lago Maggiore lies on the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, on a slope at an elevation of about 350 m above Verbano and below Monte Borgna. The municipality extends from the lake to the highlands of Monte Borgna; the difference in elevation shapes the landscape between shore and mountain. Visitors choosing the town for a stay will find, alongside views of the lake, routes through the forest and to Lago Delio, as well as historical traces in the town.
Landscape between the lake and Monte Borgna
The municipality covers about 11 km² and stretches from Lake Maggiore, at approximately 193 m, to Monte Borgna, at around 1,160 m; the difference in elevation is about 1,000 m. Lago Delio, a small lake of glacial origin, lies between Monte Borgna (1,157 m) and Monte Cadrigna (1,300 m). From the centre of Tronzano, you can climb to Lago Delio. A road suitable for vehicles reaches the lake from Maccagno via Campagnano and Musignano. If you travel on foot or by road, check local trail or road conditions in advance.
Hiking trails and views
The trails vary in route and character. An easy, flat, shaded forest road leads from Bassano to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Its churchyard sits on a promontory and offers views across Lake Maggiore towards the Canton of Ticino and the Brissago Islands. On the “Lago Maggiore e ritorno” circular route, the return leg follows an old, carefully paved mule track through forests and meadows.
The “Al Lago Delio dalla Mora” trail starts in front of the Church of San Sebastiano in Bassano. It initially follows a paved mule track; after about three kilometres, this becomes a path that climbs to Lago Delio. Another circular route leads to Ronco Scigolino and returns to the centre of Tronzano via Poggio; the trail is suitable for everyone. The wooded area around Tronzano is also suitable for trekking.
From one of the trails, the view stretches across Lake Maggiore to the Castelli di Cannero, Cannobio and its valley; farther north lies Monte Limidario (2,187 m). You can choose between a flat forest road, circular routes and a climb to the lake. Check local trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
Prehistoric and local traces
On the way to Lago Delio, a prehistoric sanctuary lies in Crocetta. An anthropomorphic cross depiction is carved into a rocky outcrop; there are also other archaeological finds. The “pile dell’orzo” are also still visible in the town: worked stone blocks that were used to dehusk barley. Their function can be understood as a specific stage of the process—the husks were removed from the barley grain.
The present-day parish church of Tronzano was originally a small oratory; it may have been built on the occasion of a plague. The Museo Etnografico Sartorio-Banfi is also located in Tronzano Lago Maggiore. Visits are possible by appointment; appointments can be arranged by email at museoezio@gmail.com.
