Porto Ceresio lies on Lake Lugano, originally also called Lago Ceresio. The lakeside promenade, historical traces and hiking trails on Monte Grumello offer different highlights for a stay. Depending on your interests, you can explore the town along the lakefront, through its local history or on trails leading to fortifications.

Lakeside Promenade and Activities on the Lake

The lakeside promenade is more than two kilometres long and runs from the train station and boat landing through the town, almost as far as the Swiss border. Some sections are built over the water. The route therefore follows the lakeshore and passes through Porto Ceresio. From here, you can also take sailing trips on Lake Lugano. The availability of sailing options may vary depending on the season and provider.

Cycling trips are also possible in Porto Ceresio, and bicycles can be rented. Rental options may change depending on the season. If you plan your trip around activities on the water or by bike, bear these seasonal differences in mind.

Local History and Museum

The museum is located in Corte del Pozzo, in the historic centre. The courtyard takes its name from a freshwater well; its remains can be seen near the entrance arch. The museum has a permanent exhibition of paintings and stucco work by the Appiani family from the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection also includes objects that offer insights into the everyday life, customs and resources of Porto Ceresio’s residents between about 1850 and 1940. Artistic works and aspects of daily life from different periods are thus presented side by side.

The Chiesa di Sant’Ambrogio is also part of the town’s history: it was elevated to parish church status in 1722. The Santuario di Maria Ausiliatrice in Selvapiana was built after the air raid of 24 October 1942. The residents of Porto Ceresio attributed the town’s remaining unharmed to the intervention of Mary.

Linea Cadorna and Trails on Monte Grumello

Fortifications from the First World War can be found on Monte Grumello and near the train station; they are part of the so-called Linea Cadorna. The section on Monte Grumello can be reached by taking the road to the hamlet of Ca’ del Monte. Near Piazzone, a marked yellow trail begins, climbing uphill. From the summit, there are panoramic views over Lake Lugano.

The Sentiero della Pace, Route 3, is a circular trail between Porto Ceresio and Cuasso al Monte. Hikes on the Sentiero start in the hamlet of Ca’ del Monte and lead to trenches, tunnels and observation posts. Check trail conditions and signs locally before setting out; both may change.

Protected Landscape and Getting There

Porto Ceresio is an important gateway to the protected, wooded area of PLIS delle Cinque Vette. The municipal area is also part of the protected natural surroundings of the Monte San Giorgio fossil site. The Italian side of this mountain area has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2010. Local guidance may be required to access individual fossil sites. Protected-area boundaries and trail conditions may change; check locally before visiting.
