Vergiate combines nature around Lago di Comabbio with wooded hills and a diverse cultural heritage. For planning your trip, the town offers several points of focus: you can explore the forests and hiking trails on Monte San Giacomo, take in the lake and its wildlife and plant life, or discover churches, frescoes and murals. Rowing and cycling and walking paths are also among the local attractions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Vergiate, these differences can help you choose the right place for your travel interests.

Forests and trails on Monte San Giacomo

The Monte San Giacomo nature reserve and nearby Monte Vigano are entirely covered by well-preserved forests of Scots pine and chestnut. Numerous trails cross the protected area and connect San Giacomo with the Bosco delle Capre in Vergiate. On the hike on Monte San Giacomo, the return route leads back to the Ornitological Trail. The nature theme therefore focuses both on the wooded landscape and on specific trail connections.

Lago di Comabbio: nature and rowing

Lago di Comabbio is a glacial lake covering 4 km². A ban on motorboats contributes to its rich wildlife and plant life; rowing is also a recreational activity on the lake. On the shore at Corgeno, by Lago di Comabbio, there is a rowing centre with a competition course used at national and international level. Here, a tangible connection with nature meets a clearly defined sporting use: the motorboat ban is linked to the diversity of fauna and flora, while rowing and competitions characterise the sporting side of the lake.

Circular route and open-air museum

The Pista ciclopedonale del Lago di Comabbio cycling and walking path runs all the way around the lake through forests and reed beds. Its route differs from the hike on Monte San Giacomo: here, the focus is on going around the lake, while there the return route leads back to the Ornitological Trail. The Giardino dell’Anima di Mario open-air museum lies along the cycling path by Lago di Comabbio, between kilometres 8 and 9. It is associated with the Atelier Mario da Corgeno. The lake area thus offers both a route through woodland and reeds and a specific connection to open-air art.

Churches, frescoes and murals

The Chiesa di San Giorgio in Corgeno preserves a Romanesque bell tower built by the Maestri Comacini. The Chiesa di San Martino Cimbro preserves an 18th-century portico. The single-nave Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, dating from the 14th century, is in Vergiate’s historic centre. The Chiesa di Sant’Eusebio in Sesona was also built in the 14th century; inside are several frescoes by Appiani. The Chiesa di San Gallo preserves medieval frescoes. The churches therefore differ in their architectural features, floor plans and wall paintings—specific points of reference if you’d like to explore different aspects of the local cultural heritage.

The murals also draw on different artistic sources: the Murale di Cimbro depicts Paul Cézanne’s work “The Card Players,” while the Murale di Vergiate shows Claude Monet’s work “Woman with a Parasol.” In Cuirone, the antico lavatoio is a lasting symbol of the village. Together, the churches, frescoes, murals and washhouse offer insight into different forms of cultural heritage in Vergiate.
