The Centro storico of Rancio Valcuvia comprises the inhabited districts of Rancio and Cantevria. Narrow lanes, Romanesque bridges, old portals made of dressed stone and several votive frescoes are part of its historic character.

Townscape, Architecture and Art

Five bridges connect the two banks of the Rancina stream in Rancio Valcuvia; one of them is a Romanesque bridge. The crossings over the stream are therefore as characteristic of the townscape as the narrow lanes and the portals made of dressed stone. Several votive frescoes add to these historic details.

The Chiesa dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano has a Latin cross floor plan, side chapels and a semicircular apse. Another named building is the former monastery of the Humiliati, the Ex-Convento degli Umiliati on Via Mazzini. It dates from the 14th century. The Madonna del Latte fresco is located on Via San Pietro in Cantevria and was probably painted in the early 15th century.

The Rancina, the Waterfall and Finding Your Way

The Rancina stream runs through the historic center. The bridges connect its two banks there; one of them is Romanesque. Another natural landmark in Rancio Valcuvia is Cascata del Ronco. The small waterfall lies within Parco del Campo dei Fiori and consists of two small cascades. The first emerges from a cave.

A specific starting point is given for finding Cascata del Ronco: From the parking lot near the A-27 company, follow the signs to Sentiero 319. After 100 meters, you will reach the turnoff for the waterfall.

Trails and Their Different Reference Points

Sentiero 19/319 begins near the medieval center of Rancio. Its starting point is the picnic area equipped by Parco Campo dei Fiori, at the intersection of Strada Provinciale No. 62 and Via Valganna. This links the start of the route to a specific place and road intersection.

Sentiero 18/318 also begins in Rancio Valcuvia, but leads to Torbiera del Paù Majur, also known as Palude Maggiore. This wetland is one of the nature reserves of Parco Campo dei Fiori.

Sass Merèe offers a historical perspective: it is an old paved path maintained by the municipality of Rancio Valcuvia. Until the end of the 19th century, it was the only transport link to the upper valley.

A Place of Remembrance

The basement of Rancio Valcuvia’s town hall is a Luogo della Memoria, commemorating events that took place in the town in November 1943. During the events of 1943, this same basement served as an interrogation and torture room. The memorial site is thus directly connected to the history of the building and the events of that time.
