Ranco: Discover Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Ranco
Ranco brings together a range of topics to consider when planning your trip: a wetland landscape with opportunities for walking and cycling, trails around San Quirico Hill, and a rich local history. There are also architectural details, a glacial erratic, and a traditional dish. You can weigh up which of these specific attractions best suits your plans.
Nature and trails around Ranco
Parco del Golfo della Quassa stretches between Ranco and Ispra. Its lakeside marshland is characterized by willow stands and reeds. It is also home to yellow irises, white and yellow water lilies, and the rare Verbano water chestnut. The variety of plants gives the park a distinct natural character: alongside the willows and reeds, several aquatic plants are part of the landscape described here.
The park is suitable for walking and cycling. Around San Quirico Hill, there are also opportunities for leisurely walks and more strenuous hikes. This means there are different ways to spend time outdoors: walks in the park, trails around the hill, or a more challenging hike. The Sentiero del Verbano passes through Ranco and is another point of interest for visitors looking for trails and hiking routes.
Buildings and local history
The Vecchio Palazzo Comunale housed Ranco’s elementary school. Gianni Rodari taught in the building from 1940 to 1941. This connection gives the Palazzo both a civic and a biographical history. Another chapter in Ranco’s story is the Cantiere Nautico Brovelli: the building was constructed in 1931 as a residence and boatyard for building boats. Its original dual function as a home and a boatyard is central to the building’s historical description.
The Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Rosario in Uponne is distinguished by its Romanesque-inspired exterior. Its features include paired windows, corbel arches, and brick and natural-stone cladding. Paired windows group windows in twos, while corbel arches add further arch forms to the façade. A fresco at Cascina Uponne is also visible from the road. The architecture and fresco offer different points of interest for anyone drawn to building styles or imagery.
Glacial erratic, historical artifacts, and Brusela
The glacial erratic Sass Cavalasc is block-shaped and measures five by eight meters. It is also known as Cavallaccio and Cavallazzo. Another historical connection can be found at a fountain with a Roman sarcophagus: it was originally connected to the old aqueduct. An old wooden statue of the Madonna del Rosario is also among the religious artworks passed down through the years; it comes from the former church of San Vittore in Angera.
Brusela offers a taste of a traditional preparation. Bread dough is filled with fresh grapes, specifically strawberry grapes or American grapes. The grape filling is covered with another layer of dough and baked in the oven. Brusela is therefore defined not only by its name, but also by its ingredients and the preparation method described here.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Ranco, you can choose your destination based on your travel plans: do you want trails and landscape to take center stage, or are you particularly interested in architectural history, historical artifacts, and Brusela? These different themes can help you decide what you’d like your stay to focus on.
