Comabbio: Lake, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Comabbio
Comabbio is a destination for travellers who want to combine nature and culture. Lake Comabbio, traces of early settlement, churches and the Lucio Fontana Atelier offer a range of different highlights. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether to focus primarily on the lakeside landscape, architectural history or art history.
Lake Comabbio: Nature, Finds and Lakeside History
Lake Comabbio is of glacial origin and rich in rare plants, particularly floating plants. The southern shore of the lake is a refuge and nesting area for many bird species. Plant life and bird habitats are therefore two distinct natural features of the lake. Neolithic pile-dwelling settlements have also been found on its shores. These archaeological traces offer a different perspective on the past from the pilgrimage church, which was rebuilt in the 17th century.
A wooden platform has also been built at Lake Comabbio, allowing visitors to travel along a stretch of more than five hundred yards over the water. If using the platform is important to your plans, check visitor access in advance. Another trace of the past by the lake lies along the lakeside path: the ancient ghiacciaia di Comabbio. In the past, food was stored there during the winter months. The platform and the ghiacciaia offer different points of interest: one focuses on moving over the water, the other on food storage in winter.
Churches and Architectural History
The Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario stands in a commanding position above Lake Comabbio, on Motto Hill. It was completely rebuilt in the first half of the 17th century. Its floor plan is octagonal, while the choir is rectangular; above it rises a dome with a lantern. The contrast between the two basic forms gives the architecture a clear structure. Its position above the lake and its individual architectural features offer different points of interest if you are interested in sacred architecture.
The Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo is also defined by its location: it stands on a hill above Comabbio. The Chiesa di San Rocco brings together architectural history, art and reused building elements. It was demolished and rebuilt in 1960 during construction of the Vergiate–Besozzo road. The church preserves four detached frescoes, including complete scenes and fragments. Its portico is supported by two reused columns from the 17th century. The frescoes and columns draw attention to different aspects of the building: its surviving artworks and older architectural elements that have been used again.
Art at the Lucio Fontana Atelier
The Casa Atelier Lucio Fontana offers another way to explore Comabbio’s cultural history. At the atelier, Lucio Fontana created his final works, “Tagli”, “Attese” and “Concetti spaziali”. Traces of paint remain on the floor, and the Casa Atelier also preserves many of Fontana’s work and carving tools in their original condition. The named works, traces of paint and tools represent different aspects of artistic creation: both the making of the works and the setting in which they were created.
To choose between nature and culture, it is worth considering their different focal points: by the lake, the main features are plants, bird species, archaeological finds and lakeside history. The churches add architecture and building history, while the Lucio Fontana Atelier brings together art and records of the artist’s work. This lets you explore Comabbio through specific interests without reducing the town to a single theme.
