Besozzo lies in a hilly landscape between Lago di Varese and Verbano. The Bardello stream runs through the town. For planning your trip, you can choose between different points of interest: historic buildings and cultural sites in Besozzo, as well as routes connecting the town with other municipalities and landscapes. This lets you decide whether you are mainly interested in architectural history or would also like to include walking and cycling routes in your plans.

Historic Sites and Architecture

Besozzo Superiore preserves buildings that were inhabited by the noble families of Besozzi and Castelbesozzo during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The district therefore reflects a long local history, while its churches showcase different periods and forms of religious art.

The Church of Saints Alessandro and Tiburzio was rebuilt between 1618 and 1686 and is considered an example of Lombard Baroque. Inside, you will find paintings and stucco work; the barrel vault is decorated with frescoes. Other features include the elaborately carved wooden pulpit and the similarly carved choir. The paintings and stucco shape the impression of the interior differently from the finely worked wooden details.

The Church of Sant'Antonio also has a long history: it already existed in the 15th century and was restored toward the end of the 18th century. In the Oratorio di San Nicone, frescoes and decorative objects left by local noble families are part of the interior. The saint's mortal remains are displayed in a case above the high altar. Together, the three sites offer distinct points of interest, from architectural history and painted decoration to objects passed down through generations.

Another historic site is the decommissioned Cotonificio Cantoni–Copertificio Sonnino. The system of sluice gates and the footbridge over the Bardello are still preserved there. The combination of an industrial site and the river offers a different perspective on Besozzo's architectural past, complementing its religious and historic buildings.

Remembrance and Cultural Events

Il Faro is a war memorial whose construction began in 1923. It is dedicated to the 68 fallen from Besozzo and the 49 fallen from districts that were independent at the time. These separate figures refer to the main town and its formerly independent districts.

The Teatro Duse was established in 2007 as a multipurpose hall with 224 seats. Since 2007, it has hosted performances of various kinds, concerts, and graduation and lecture events. The seating capacity gives you a concrete sense of the hall's size, while its program covers a range of event formats.

Routes Through Besozzo and the Surrounding Area

The Sentiero del Verbano passes through Besozzo and is part of the Vie Verdi dei Laghi. These routes connect Sesto Calende with Laveno Mombello via ten municipalities. The Sentiero dei Mulini, also known as route VVL-F1, offers a different focus: the 16.2-kilometer route uses Besozzo as a central hub and links historic factory sites and icehouses between Monvalle, Brebbia, and Bardello.

The two routes can be distinguished by their stated points of reference: the Sentiero del Verbano focuses on the connection between Sesto Calende and Laveno Mombello via several municipalities, while the Sentiero dei Mulini follows a sequence of historic sites and icehouses. Cycling and walking routes also connect Besozzo with the circular route around Lago di Varese and provide connections toward Valcuvia and as far as Luino. If you are comparing routes, these details offer different points of reference: a route through several municipalities, a trail with a specified length, and connections for walking and cycling in other directions.
