Orino brings together local history, architecture and trails. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in town, you can choose your focus based on whether you are most interested in the Rocca di Orino, historical landmarks, the Museo Pom Pepin, or trails on foot and by bike.

Rocca di Orino and the town’s history

The Rocca di Orino is an ancient fortress northeast of the municipality of the same name. It stands at 537 m above sea level on a rocky promontory overlooking much of the Valcuvia. The rectangular perimeter wall, topped with battlements, has two towers; inside it stands the Rocchetta fortress. The outer fortification and the inner fortress can therefore be understood as two levels of the structure.

The first official document to mention Orino is a donation made in 712 by the Lombard King Liutprand to the Monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro in Pavia. The first documentary records of the Rocca, on the other hand, date from March 1176. These dates refer to different historical milestones: 712 to Orino’s first mention, and 1176 to the Rocca.

Church and Museo Pom Pepin

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo was founded in the 14th century and rebuilt in the first half of the 17th century. Its Romanesque bell tower still stands. The church thus brings together several building phases: its founding, its later rebuilding and its Romanesque tower.

The Museo Pom Pepin is a mobile museum. Objects from the rural past and everyday life are displayed in cellars along Orino’s streets. They include agricultural equipment, wood-chopping tools and instruments for processing grapes. The exhibits offer insight into various aspects of rural daily life. Hiking and cycling trails

Trail No. 302 (Orino–Forte di Orino) starts in Orino, passes close to Pian delle Noci and continues to the viewpoint at Forte di Orino. The European long-distance path E1 also passes through Orino on the section from Forte di Orino to Orino. For Trail No. 302, the stated details are its starting point in Orino, its route near Pian delle Noci and the viewpoint as its destination; for the E1, the relevant section is between Forte di Orino and Orino.

The Sentiero Incantato features wooden sculptures and artistic installations. The historic Forte di Orino–Sentiero della Pace nature trail has a different focus: it is part of the Linea Cadorna military fortification system and runs within Parco Campo dei Fiori. This trail includes an artillery emplacement, a gun emplacement on Monte Tre Croci and remnants of paths on steep slopes. The named trails therefore differ in their themes: viewpoints and routes, artistic elements, and military heritage each provide a different focus.

A cycling route also leads to the Rocca: “Da Varese a Orino” passes through the forest and by the old washhouse before reaching the Rocca di Orino. It describes a sequence from the forest, past the washhouse, to the fortress, and complements the hiking trails with a cycling route.
