Arsago Seprio offers cultural and natural attractions with clearly distinct highlights: archaeological history, Romanesque architecture, the Palio dei Rioni and a trail through the Palude Pollini. You can tailor your trip according to whether you want to focus on church architecture, historical remains, a festival or different types of landscape.

Archaeological History and Tower

The garden of the Museo Civico Archeologico e Paleontologico corresponds to the archaeological site of the Lombard necropolis on Via Vanoni. The link between the garden and the necropolis offers a tangible point of interest for travellers interested in the Lombard past.

The Torre Altomedievale di Arsago Seprio stands in a commanding position in the town centre. Its square ground plan and partially ruined condition define its architectural appearance. The tower originally served as a lookout post. The ruins may be the only remains of the 14th-century Visconti castle.

Romanesque Churches and Notable Features

The Basilica di San Vittore is an important example of a Romanesque church built on the site of an earlier place of worship. Its rectangular ground plan and three wide naves describe its architectural layout in more detail: the ground plan gives the overall shape, while the naves divide the interior. This makes it possible to trace both the Romanesque design and the connection to an older place of worship in a single building.

With its octagonal ground plan, the Battistero di San Giovanni offers a different geometric accent from the rectangular Basilica. In a chapel to the right of the altar, a lapidarium preserves Roman and Carolingian inscriptions. Here, the building’s shape and the surviving inscribed stones come together as distinct aspects of architectural history.

Santi Cosma e Damiano also has a Romanesque appearance. The single-nave interior measures 6 × 11 metres; these dimensions add a specific indication of scale to its stylistic classification. The church lies among fields and woods. Its altar table is an ancient marble slab bearing an inscription about Caio Terenzio and his family.

Santa Maria in Monticello was built on a small rise overlooking Piazza Cavour in the town centre. Remains of Romanesque frescoes have survived; they were discovered during restoration work in 1975. There is also a 16th-century icon at the altar depicting the Virgin Mary nursing the infant Jesus. Thus, this site brings together surviving frescoes and a later-dated image.

Palio dei Rioni and Notte a Colori

The Palio dei Rioni includes a historical procession through the streets of the historic town centre. It depicts four periods in the history of Arsago Seprio. The Palio opens with the Notte a Colori celebration, whose programme includes live music, entertainment and local food. The specific programme may change. If you are planning your trip around the Palio, check the date and programme in advance.

Landscape at the Palude Pollini

The trail through the Palude Pollini passes through farmland, wooded areas and wetlands. It offers a change of scenery from the architectural forms and inscriptions of the churches. If you are weighing up culture and nature while planning your trip, this change of focus offers a practical guide.
