The ancient Naviglio Martesana runs through Bellinzago Lombardo. Along the canal in town, extensive fields, an irrigation system and farmsteads shape the typical agricultural landscape. At the same time, historic farmhouses, mills and waterside buildings represent different aspects of the area’s rural heritage. If you are looking for a hotel in Bellinzago Lombardo, you can plan your trip around these themes: the canal landscape, the history of milling, or the architecture of the farmhouses and villas.

Naviglio Martesana and Rural Architecture

Villa Fornaci is home to one of the five locks on the Naviglio Martesana. The lock is a tangible feature of water engineering history; the fields, irrigation system and farmsteads characterize the agricultural landscape along the canal. The character of the area can thus be understood both through its water infrastructure and its agricultural surroundings.

The buildings also tell of different periods of construction. Cascina Misericordia consists of two buildings facing one another: one dates from the 17th century, the other from the 19th. Villa Maderna, Moioli has a U-shaped floor plan that opens toward the Naviglio. Villa Carcano, Arrigoni is dated to the first half of the 19th century. The villa once had a large landing stage on the Naviglio della Martesana; it has since disappeared.

The area’s rural history also includes Cascina delle Galline, which already existed in 1721 and is now part of Bellinzago Lombardo, as well as a former silk mill among the rural buildings in Villa Fornaci. Cascina delle Galline already existed in 1721; the former silk mill is part of the history of rural buildings in Villa Fornaci.

Mills and the Giro degli 8 Mulini

Mulino Busca is an old water mill that represents the history of the area and the traditional art of milling. It is one of the stops on the Giro degli 8 Mulini. The mill is associated with historic machinery: it is thought to have had two wooden wheels until it ceased operating. The mill’s waterfall has three tiers. Thus, a detail about its former equipment, explicitly identified as an assumption, sits alongside a specific description of the waterfall.

The Giro degli 8 Mulini is an easy bike tour with eight stages, suitable for everyone. The number of stages and the stop at Mulino Busca are useful points of reference when planning the tour. Check route conditions before setting out. The tour and the mill combine two different interests: cycling and the history of milling.

The Sagra di Primavera is held every year on the last Sunday in May and includes entertainment, markets and performances. The two events therefore take place at different times of year and offer different reasons to include Bellinzago Lombardo in your travel plans. Check the dates for the year of your trip if you wish to plan your stay around either event.

Route Conditions and Connections

A significant restriction applies to the Naviglio for a clearly defined period: the towpath section between Gorgonzola and Bellinzago Lombardo is closed to traffic from August 31, 2026, through March 1, 2027, inclusive, due to work on the crossing over the Trobbia stream. The closure applies to this section and period only.

Gessate station, the terminus of the green Metro Line 2, is easily accessible from the area around Bellinzago Lombardo. Check the latest service information before travelling. Villa Fornaci is also part of the area’s transport history: it was a station on the branch line of the Milan–Gorgonzola–Vaprio–Bergamo tramway. This former tram connection should be distinguished from the current travel option via Gessate station.
