Carpiano: Castles, Churches and Parks
Accommodation in Carpiano
Carpiano brings together historic buildings, parks and a path along the area’s country roads. Castello di Carpiano and Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo provide a cultural focus, while green spaces and sports facilities round out the picture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Carpiano, consider whether architectural history, parks or outdoor activities are especially important for your trip.
Castello di Carpiano and Historic Buildings
Castello di Carpiano was rebuilt by Carthusian monks in 1549; its original form dates from the 14th century. It is a rectangular, fortified grange castle with four corner towers, three of which are visible today. The building thus brings together a medieval original structure and a later reconstruction. The castle also includes an oratory dedicated to Saint Bruno, which was consecrated in 1645.
Details of the castle’s decoration also offer a distinctive way to explore its history: the inscription “GRA CAR” appears on its marble decorations and frescoes, referring to the Certosa di Pavia. Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo also dates from the 14th century. Its square portico is supported by twisted columns made of Candoglia marble, which come from the Certosa di Pavia. An ancient Serizzo column in Piazza Colonna gives the square its name. The castle, church and square therefore offer different historical and architectural points of interest.
Parks and Landscape Around Carpiano
Carpiano lies entirely within Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. The history of the landscape also includes the management of the surrounding lands, which promoted agricultural activity through a significant irrigation system. This connection adds the area’s agricultural landscape to the perspective on its historic buildings.
Parco degli Aironi is Carpiano’s main public park and has a children’s playground. The park also features a permanent stage for events and a bookcrossing service. It thus combines play facilities with spaces for events and books. Sentiero delle Querce offers a different way to explore the area: it runs for about six kilometres along Carpiano’s country roads. Its approximate length and route provide specific points of reference if you want to include a walk in your travel plans.
Frutteto del Castello is in the centre of Carpiano, next to the castle. Its entrance and car park are wheelchair accessible. Parco di Francolino is a public park in Francolino and has a children’s playground. Its entrance and car park are also wheelchair accessible. The two parks can be distinguished by their locations and facilities without conflating their features.
