Three distinct themes shape the selection: the history of a former Olivetan monastery, architecture and art in several churches, and protected landscapes along the Olona. The historic center lies immediately south of Legnano and away from State Road 33 del Sempione. Please check current traffic and access information when planning your route.

Landscape along the Olona

Parco dei Mulini also includes areas within the municipality of Nerviano and lies along the Olona River. Its protected landscape is predominantly agricultural, with few woodlands. For your travel planning, it offers a distinct contrast to the churches and former monastery: here, the focus is on a river landscape shaped by agriculture.

Monastery and Churches

The former Olivetan monastery of Santa Maria Incoronata was founded in 1468 and dissolved in 1798. After restoration, its 15th-century cloister became home to the Nerviano town library. A cloister is a covered walkway that runs around a monastery’s courtyard. The former convent’s institutional history and the library’s use of the cloister thus belong to different periods in the history of the same complex.

The circular Rotondina, also known as Chiesa dell’Annunciata, was built in the late 17th century to preserve a 16th-century fresco of the Annunciation. The fresco was probably created more than 150 years before the oratory was built. The building and artwork therefore date from clearly distinct periods: the later building was constructed to protect the older image.

Chiesa di Sant’Ilario Vescovo has a single-nave layout. In the San Bernardino Chapel, the church preserves a wooden crucifix from the predecessor church, probably dating from the late 17th century. Frescoes by Angelo Bacchetta depict Saint Hilary’s dispute with Arian bishops. The crucifix’s origins link it to the predecessor church, while the fresco cycle foregrounds a specific religious dispute.

The options offer clear distinctions if you are choosing a cultural and historical focus: Santa Maria Incoronata combines monastic history with use as a library, while the Rotondina pairs its circular design with the protection of an older fresco. Sant’Ilario Vescovo offers different points of interest: its single-nave layout, a crucifix from the predecessor church, and religious frescoes.

Walking and Festival Dates

Itinerary 1 in Parco del Roccolo is a walking route that begins at Laghetto Cantone di Nerviano. As the park administration may update route details, check the current route description before setting out. A local report from 2020 describes Festa del Lazzaretto di Nerviano as traditionally taking place in the last week of September. The annual program may vary; if you want to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.
