Legnano: Culture, History and Green Spaces
Accommodation in Legnano
Legnano offers a range of options for your stay, including exhibitions, archaeological collections, historic churches and green spaces. If you’re looking for a hotel in Legnano, the activities you have in mind can help narrow down your choices: you might focus on art and local history, take a walk along the historic Olona Trail or plan your stay around an event. The sights offer different ways to explore the area, without requiring you to follow a fixed itinerary.
Art, Archaeology and Local History
Castello di San Giorgio is now an exhibition venue; it displays Gaetano Previati’s triptych depicting the Battle of Legnano. The site has a longer history, too: in the 13th century, it was home to a church dedicated to Saint George and an Augustinian monastery. The Museo Civico Guido Sutermeister focuses on archaeological collections, with finds dating from the 3rd millennium BC to the Renaissance. In the museum’s Loggetta, a chronological exhibition on the ancient cultures of the Legnano area spans the period from the 3rd millennium BC to the 7th century AD. Paid guided tours for individuals and groups are available by advance booking.
The Basilica di San Magno was built between 1504 and 1513. The young painter Gian Giacomo Lampugnani transferred Bramante’s drawings and instructions onto its walls. The basilica also houses works by Bernardino Luini, Bernardino Lanino, Francesco Lampugnani and Gianbattista Lampugnani. The Chiesa di Sant'Ambrogio offers another glimpse into the past: its foundations include those of a semicircular apse, originally facing east, which archaeologists date to the 5th century. Eight prophets by Giambattista and Francesco Lampugnani are depicted in the lunettes.
The garden around the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie contains fifteen semicircularly arranged chapels. Their frescoes were originally created in 1895/97 by Bacchetta, a painter from Cremona. Palazzo Leone da Perego and Palazzo Ottone Visconti date to the second half of the 13th century; both belonged to the archiepiscopal domain, which also covered large areas in central Legnano. The Monumento di Alberto da Giussano offers a later point of reference: sculptor Enrico Butti created it, and it was unveiled in 1900. The Santuario di Santa Teresa del Bambin GesĂą was consecrated on 13 September 1933.
The Museo Fratelli Cozzi has its own focus: its collection includes more than 60 Alfa Romeo vehicles, telling 60 years of history. Legnano’s attractions thus range from archaeological finds and religious art to the history of a car brand.
Green Spaces and the Historic Olona Trail
Parco Alto Milanese is a protected area designated as a Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale (PLIS), about 178 hectares of which lie in Legnano. The Biblioteca Verde is a botanical educational trail located there. Ten information panels make it a resource for students and the wider community. For a walk combining nature and history, the historic Olona Trail offers a clearly described route: it runs from the waterfalls on Via Pontida to Cornaggia Mill at Castello Visconteo di Legnano. Nine waypoints and explanatory signs mark the route. It is free and accessible to people with disabilities.
Parco Castello has a different connection to the landscape: it forms part of the larger local park, PLIS dei Mulini, along the Olona River. The two park areas offer different options when planning your stay: Parco Alto Milanese has a botanical educational trail at the Biblioteca Verde, while Parco Castello is part of the larger parkland along the Olona. The Olona Trail, meanwhile, is described as a walking route with named endpoints and waypoints.
Events and Planning Your Visit
The Palio di Legnano includes events reenacting the Battle of Legnano. At “Manieri Aperti,” held on the first Sunday in May, visitors can attend a Contrada dinner, visit exhibitions on history and costume, and take guided tours of the Manieri. If an event is important to your stay, check the date in advance.
Also note that museum visiting arrangements vary: the Museo Fratelli Cozzi is open to the public on scheduled opening dates; it is not open to the public outside those dates and hours. Check the scheduled dates and hours before your visit. Paid guided tours of the Museo Civico Guido Sutermeister are available by advance booking. Knowing these specific arrangements can help you plan cultural visits and find a suitable hotel in Legnano.
