If you’re looking for a hotel in Rho, the cultural focus of your stay can be a useful starting point. Rho brings together a historic aristocratic residence with an adjoining park, religious architectural history, and more recent art and architecture. The themes range from Villa Burba, completed in 1665, to Piazza Costellazione, inaugurated in 2015, and the Teatro Civico Roberto de Silva, built between 2015 and 2021. You can plan your visit around whether you’re especially interested in the history of residences and parks, religious traditions, or urban design.

Villa Burba and its Park

Villa Burba is an aristocratic residence completed in 1665. It is directly adjacent to a park that preserves valuable features and has distinctive botanical species. Two different aspects therefore sit side by side here: the villa offers a historical reference point, while the park provides a perspective of its own through its botanical features. If you’d like to take both architectural history and botanical points of interest into account when planning your trip, the combination of these themes provides a clear guide.

Religious History: San Vittore and the Sanctuary

The foundation of the Chiesa Prepositurale di San Vittore Martire is documented as far back as 846. The Basilica di San Vittore Martire was built in the neoclassical style, based on designs by Besi and Aluisetti. The surviving right-hand bell tower was raised to a height of 58.40 meters. Together, these details offer a glimpse of different aspects of religious history: its long-documented foundation, its neoclassical architecture, and a specific measurement of the building.

The Santuario della Vergine Addolorata offers another historical perspective. According to contemporary accounts, a miracle took place on April 24, 1583, in a small chapel containing a Pietà: the Madonna depicted in the Pietà wept tears of blood. Saint Charles Borromeo then ordered the sanctuary’s design. The event is thus presented as a reported occurrence; at the same time, it explains the historical connection with the sanctuary’s design.

Art and Architecture in the Cityscape

Inaugurated on April 16, 2015, Piazza Costellazione is a permanent public artwork made of 250,000 blue ceramic tiles. The mosaic symbolizes the celestial vault and the constellation Aquarius; a “Milky Way” runs through it. Its materials and subject give this work a different emphasis from the historic residences and religious buildings.

The Teatro Civico Roberto de Silva is also an example of a more recent architectural project in Rho. It was built between 2015 and 2021, based on a design by the architecture firm Arassociati and an urban planning project by Studio Banfi e Pezzetta. In terms of chronology, Villa Burba and these more recent projects are far apart: the year 1665 points to the history of the residence, while the details about Piazza Costellazione and the theater place art and architecture in the 21st century.

Along the Ciclovia Pianura Olona

The Ciclovia Pianura Olona starts at Rho’s Tourist Information Point in Piazza San Vittore. Its description includes a visit to the Santuario della Vergine Addolorata and Villa Burba; the route also runs along Corso Europa. If you’re planning to cycle the route, check local route conditions in advance.

Rho’s U.O. Infopoint Turistico offers official tourist assistance and information. If you’re planning to make use of these services, check the current service details in advance. This provides a practical distinction when choosing travel themes: Villa Burba and the sanctuary are also included in the route description, while the information about San Vittore, Piazza Costellazione, and the Teatro Civico adds to the picture of Rho’s historical and architectural variety.
