Discover Varedo: Villas, Churches and History
Accommodation in Varedo
Varedo brings together different aspects of its history: churches with distinct architectural features, Villa Bagatti Valsecchi and its park, and links to the scientist Maria Gaetana Agnesi and the town’s industrial history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Varedo, these themes provide a concrete backdrop for your stay. You can explore the individual places according to your interests in architecture, sacred art, designed landscapes or local history.
Villa Bagatti Valsecchi and its park
Villa Bagatti Valsecchi was built in 1878 on the foundations of an existing 18th-century farmhouse. The grounds include a park of around 64,500 square metres. This combination of an older structure and the later villa makes it possible to trace the development of the site across several periods.
One defining feature of the design is the perspective avenue: it is 1,347.70 metres long and 35 metres wide. The avenue dates to 1881 and was designed by engineer Domenico Laveni. In GruBrìa Park, the historic avenue at Villa Bagatti Valsecchi is considered the site’s most important area of historical and artistic value. Its dimensions illustrate the grand scale of the perspective layout.
Other details also make the design easy to read. The villa’s portico is supported by 24 white granite columns. The fountain is set on an axis with the villa and the avenue; its concave elliptical basin covers 121.38 square metres and features a central water jet. The combination of columns, a clear axis and an elliptical basin offers a range of architectural reference points within the ensemble.
The park also contains an icehouse. It is the only surviving one of the five recorded in Varedo. Alongside the villa, avenue and fountain, it brings another distinctive structure on the grounds into view.
Churches and architectural details
The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is a Lombard Gothic Revival building designed by architect Giuseppe Bagatti Valsecchi. Its façade is distinguished by a large rose window with a moulded terracotta surround. The round shape and detailed frame create a striking contrast in the façade’s details. The altar features four silver busts of saints and white marble statues of Saints Peter and Paul. Here, the exterior architecture and the described elements of the altar design come together.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunciata stands in the Valera district on Provincial Road 132 towards Desio and dates from the 17th century. Its interior comprises a rectangular liturgical hall with a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Compared with the Gothic Revival Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, the two churches offer different points of interest: here, the date and the shape of the interior are defining features; there, the Gothic Revival style, rose window and altar design take centre stage.
Other connections to Varedo’s history
Villa Agnesi is closely associated with the memory of Maria Gaetana Agnesi, who was a scientist, humanist and philanthropist. This connection adds a personal and cultural dimension to Varedo alongside its buildings. It differs from the architectural history of the villas and churches, but remains another tangible way to explore the town’s past.
The viscose factory is also part of the town’s history: it operated from 1924 under the name “S.A. Seta Artificiale Varedo” and was renamed SNIA in 1927. These two dates help place this chapter in time. In the agricultural area between Varedo, Desio and Nova Milanese, there is also a wildlife passage for small animals beneath Viale Brianza. This landscape feature spans the area between the three municipalities.
A useful point of reference for your journey is Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, about a five-minute walk from Varedo railway station. This approximate walking time refers to the route between the station and the villa. Together with the different historical highlights, it provides a clear point of reference when planning your stay in Varedo.
