If you would like to include architectural history and art in your travel plans while searching for a hotel, Fino del Monte offers several points of interest. The town is located on the Clusone plateau and overlooks the Valle Borlezza. Il Convento, Castello di Fino del Monte and the Chiesa parrocchiale dedicata a S. Andrea Apostolo each reveal different facets of the town’s history.

Il Convento: Cloister and Founding History

Il Convento combines its founding history with a distinctive cloister. Caterina, daughter of Giovanni, a citizen of Bergamo and son of Simeone Da Fin, founded it before 1520. The cloister’s brick arcades stand alongside columns made of Sarnico stone; their capitals bear typical 15th-century ornaments. Brick and Sarnico stone are more than simply different materials: together with the decorated capitals, they give the cloister its distinctive architectural character.

In the courtyard, a stone portal with a Romanesque appearance marks the entrance; a 15th-century fresco is located above it. This entrance thus brings together an architectural form and a work of art from the same period.

The Castle and Parish Church: Architectural Features and Works of Art

The dating of the portico at Castello di Fino del Monte is uncertain: it appears to be the oldest part of the building and may date from the 13th century. The north façade preserves the best-preserved section of the old masonry made of Ceppo blocks. Here, a possible date for one architectural feature meets a tangible characteristic of the surviving masonry.

The Chiesa parrocchiale dedicata a S. Andrea Apostolo offers a different chronological perspective. Construction began in 1903, and the building was consecrated in 1911. The church is in the Neo-Renaissance style. At the same time, it houses works of art from earlier centuries: the main altar features Moroni’s 1577 altarpiece depicting the Madonna, Jesus, Saint Andrew and Saint Peter. Carlo Ceresa’s 1650 painting The Deposition from the Cross can also be found in the church. The dates of the church’s construction and of the works of art thus provide different points of reference for the town’s history.
