Sorisole between Canto Alto and local history
Accommodation in Sorisole
Sorisole combines a marked range of elevations with geological features and its own local history. The municipal area stretches from the inter-hill plain of Petosino to the 1,146-metre summit of Canto Alto, a difference in elevation of around 850 metres. The plain and the mountain massif therefore lie side by side as distinct landscapes within the area. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on nature, trails or the historic centre.
Landscape and geology
At Forcella di Camblì, you can see closely layered grey, green and red claystones and marls. Limestone layers and thin beds of black bituminous claystone lie between them. The rocks belong to the “Marne di Bruntino” formation. Their colours and layers make the geological diversity of this place clearly visible.
Above Sorisole, the Morla is also of particular geological interest: underground caves follow its course. The Canto Alto massif also varies in character. Some of its ridges are marked by open habitats and flower-rich summit meadows.
Routes to Forcella di Camblì
Two access routes to Forcella di Camblì are identified: it can be reached from Cappella del Pisgiù via CAI trail 220 and from Forcella della Rua via CAI trail 113. The starting points and trail numbers offer practical guidance if you plan to visit this geological formation.
Hiking trail 220 starts at the “Pisgiù” restaurant north of Sorisole. A narrow road leads to the starting point, where parking is available. As parking conditions can change, check the situation before setting off.
Canto Alto and rock climbing
The third cross, which still stands, is located on Canto Alto. It was inaugurated on 2 September 1979 and is 32.5 metres high. Alongside its scenic significance, the date and height give the mountain a clear historical point of reference.
Above Sorisole is also the “Cörna di Marte” crag, a rock face equipped for free climbing. Equipment and route conditions can change; check their condition before climbing.
Church and local history
The Chiesa di San Pietro is located in the historic centre of Sorisole. Construction of the present church began in 1704, after the older church dedicated to the Madonna was demolished. The new church was consecrated in 1739 and elevated to the status of a provost church. The Chiesa Prepositurale di San Pietro apostolo e Sant’Alessandro martire is considered a museum of Bergamasque Baroque art.
With the church in the town centre and nature attractions around Forcella di Camblì and Canto Alto, Sorisole offers different focal points for a stay. You can therefore give greater weight to local history, geology or mountain scenery when choosing your destination.
A living tradition
The traditional “Lotto dei Morti” is also part of the local cultural heritage. It is one of Sorisole’s characteristic customs and is maintained by the parish communities.
