Selino Basso: Routes, Churches and History
Accommodation in Selino Basso
Selino Basso brings together walking trails with church and local history. This offers different ways to choose a travel destination: the Sentiero da Selino Basso and the Percorso Vita, as well as the architectural history of Santa Maria Immacolata and CĂ Mazzoleni. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether you would rather focus on the routes or the historic sites.
Trails and Route Options
The map of the Santuario della Cornabusa lists the Sentiero da Selino Basso as one of the Cammini del Cuore. The name is a point of reference for travelers interested in this hiking route. The Percorso Vita starts in Selino Basso and runs along the Torrente Imagna through Rota d’Imagna, Locatello and Corna Imagna. The route is ten kilometers long, surrounded by greenery and designed for cyclists and pedestrians. It also includes areas for sporting activities. There are equipped picnic areas as well, and parking and rest areas are available along the route.
The options for choosing a route differ: the Sentiero is classified as a Cammino del Cuore, while the Percorso Vita can be described by its length, type of path and course along the Torrente Imagna. Route files in PGX or KML format can be downloaded for Valle Imagna Easy.
Churches and Local History
The parish of Selino Basso was established by a decree dated July 31, 1951. The existing church of Santa Maria Immacolata was expanded to include two naves in 1979. A new parish church of Santa Maria Immacolata was built in 1991 to a design by architect Pasquale Bruno. The dates mark two distinct stages of construction: first, the expansion of an existing church building, and later, the construction of the new parish church. This sequence connects the history of the parish with two distinct phases of construction.
CĂ Mazzoleni also adds to the historical picture: it was once an aristocratic residence in the Selino Basso area. The local history therefore includes not only parish and church buildings, but also this former, independent landmark.
Culture and Thermal History in Sant’Omobono Terme
The Santuario della Cornabusa is located in the municipality of Sant’Omobono Terme. You can reach it by car or on foot along a path from Cepino. The Sanctuary’s museum houses old votive plaques in a folk-art style in the municipality. The collection adds another expression of religious culture to the history of church architecture.
The thermal waters of Sant’Omobono Terme come from a sulfur spring that emerges from bituminous limestone. The baths of Sant’Omobono Terme have been known and appreciated since the 18th century. The origin of the water and the baths’ historical renown describe two distinct aspects of this subject.
