Castro lies on the western shore of Lake Iseo, between Riva di Solto and Lovere. The historic center, walking trails and the landscape of the Gola del Tinazzo give the town a variety of facets: you can combine views of the lake and gorge with historic trails and traces of local craftsmanship. When looking for a hotel in Castro, these specific highlights can help you assess whether the destination suits your interests.

Lakefront, town center and the Gola del Tinazzo

In the historic center, narrow lanes and houses sit close to the lake. The town is clustered around the former parish church, making it easy to get a feel for the character of the center without lengthy directions. The Parco della Gola del Tinazzo offers a striking contrast in scenery. The protected area preserves a deep, narrow gorge carved by the Tinazzo River in the distant geological past.

The Sentiero dello Stross leads from the lakeside road to Castro’s viewpoint. From there and along the trail, you can enjoy views of the lake and gorge, with its distinctive vertical rock slabs rising from the water. If you would rather plan a short walk to a named historic site, there is another option: an easy trail leads from the center to the Church of San Lorenzo and a viewing terrace overlooking Lake Iseo. The Chiesetta di San Lorenzo was built around the middle of the 12th century. This date is an approximate estimate.

Walking trails with different highlights

Each trail has its own starting point or thematic focus. The Sentiero La Panoramica – Valle del Freddo starts in Castro near the Cappella del Colet. The Sentiero dell’energia is for hikers interested in understanding how water can be used to generate energy. For the walk to the Church of San Lorenzo, the specific reference point is the easy stroll from the town center, with its views of the lake. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a viewpoint, a specific destination or an explanatory theme, without treating the trails as one combined route.

Via Corna is also interesting for finding your way around the town, though primarily as a historic route. The medieval road was designed for cart traffic; to make it easier for carts to pass, wheel ruts were carved into the natural rock. At its narrowest point, between the rock face and the drop, a fortified gate was built to protect the area of Castro. The two grooves cut into the rock have been preserved. The route therefore tells not only of movement through the landscape, but also of a defensive structure at an especially narrow point.

Craftsmanship and history in Castro

Castro’s history is closely tied to metalworking. A silver foundry, probably also used for iron, is documented in 1229. Notarial records from 1364 mention blacksmiths in Castro. In the hamlet of Poltragno, a water-powered forge has been in operation since 1400; today it is called Maglio Carrara. These references from different periods offer insight into the town’s long tradition of craftsmanship, but do not indicate whether the site can currently be visited or is in operation.

The harbor is also part of the town’s history: it was probably established in the first half of the 11th century as a landing place in the northern part of Lake Iseo and was under the jurisdiction of Bergamo. The Church of the Nativity of Mary is located beside the cemetery. It is associated with dedications to the Nativity of Mary and to the Virgin of Grace. To explore the town’s history, you can consider these different traces side by side: the harbor, churches, routes and crafts each represent a distinct aspect of the town.

Planning your stay

If you are looking for a hotel in Castro, you can weigh up the specific options: an easy walk to the viewing terrace, the Sentiero dello Stross with its views of the lake and gorge, or the historic traces in the center and in Poltragno.
