Natural sites and accessible trails
Sentiero naturalistico e osservatorio has a paved surface and protective barriers with handrails. A guiding rail helps blind visitors find their way. The observatory is housed in a restored old hut that retains its traditional architecture. From the viewing balcony, you can see the lake.
The Botanical Garden can be reached via an accessible footpath from the car park on Via Pagliari; the path crosses the Brembo over an old stone arch bridge. The garden is fully equipped for access by wheelchair users and blind visitors. A further path leads from the garden along the Brembo to waterfalls and particularly clear water.
The Lungo-Lago path has tables, sunbathing areas and children’s play areas with climbing structures made of blocks. The path is accessible to people with motor and sensory disabilities. Sala Bouldering is also accessible to people with reduced mobility. It is on the ground floor and has safety systems.
Cultural landscape and history
Pagliari is a small rural hamlet about one kilometre from Carona, at an altitude of 1,350 metres, on the road to Rifugi Calvi and Longo. Its characteristic features include exposed local stone walls and distinctive slate roofs. A “sapel” is an opening in a dry-stone wall or a retaining wall. It made it easier to access potato fields on steep slopes.
The rock-carving area contains numerous engraved boulders at elevations between 2,100 and 2,450 metres. In Val Camisana, the CMS 1 rock bears figures dating to the 5th century BC, as well as Celtic inscriptions in the Lepontic alphabet dating from the 3rd to 2nd century BC.
Carona’s white potatoes are also part of local history: Italy’s first gastronomic guidebook publication described them as “floury and long-lasting”. Potatoes were also used to make up for flour shortages and to produce bread that would keep for a long time.
