Discover Gandosso: Sacred History and Le Molere
Accommodation in Gandosso
Gandosso can be explored from several cultural and historical perspectives: sacred buildings and religious art offer a different focus from the former quarrying work at Le Molere. If you are planning your stay, this distinction can help you choose whether to focus on architectural history, art, views or historic work.
Sacred Architecture and Art
The Santuario della Madonna del Castello stands on the ridge of the mountain of the same name, near Gandosso’s parish church. A chapel dedicated to Madonna del Castello is documented as early as 1590; construction of the parish church began in 1678. These dates refer to different milestones: 1590 is the year for which the chapel is documented, while 1678 marks the start of construction of the parish church.
The parish church’s interior decoration can also be dated: its stucco work was completed in 1739. The Santuario is home to valuable canvas paintings of the Stations of the Cross. They date from the mid-18th century, possibly from 1757. If you would like to compare architecture and art, the two sacred sites offer different points of interest: the parish church’s construction phases and interior decoration, and the Santuario’s paintings.
Circular Route to the Santelle
The circular route to discover Gandosso’s Santelle begins at the municipal building on Via Bossoletti. This gives you a specific starting point for finding your way if the Santelle are the focus of your visit.
Monte del Castello and Panoramic Views
Monte del Castello is the highest point in the municipality of Gandosso. The path leads there, and from the summit, panoramic views extend across all the valleys below. This adds a landscape dimension to the history of architecture and art: the route to the Santelle has a designated starting point, while Monte del Castello is a destination associated with a panorama.
The Quarrying History of Le Molere
Le Molere is a site of historical and natural interest, with quarries where large millstones for grinding grain were extracted as early as Roman times. This work continued for centuries and was finally abandoned in the post-war period. The timeline therefore stretches from Roman times to the end of a long quarrying tradition. Unlike the sacred buildings, the focus here is not on construction phases or religious decoration, but on extracting the millstones and the long history of this work. You can therefore choose between different themes for your visit: religious art and architecture on the one hand, and the historic use of the quarries on the other.
Feast of Madonna del Rosario
The major Feast of Madonna del Rosario is celebrated in the third week of October and is especially associated with a large meal featuring Polenta e uccelli. The annual programme may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current dates and programme in advance.
