Arenzano: Coast, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Arenzano
Arenzano brings together historic palazzi, parks and coastal activities with the Beigua landscape. When planning a stay, different interests can take centre stage: architecture and gardens, a guided tour, kayaking routes or a hike. If you are looking for a hotel in Arenzano, you can first consider which of these sides of the town you want to shape your stay.
Palazzi, Basilica and Historic Traces
In the centre of Arenzano, historic palazzi preserve characteristic details of Ligurian architecture. These include old sundials, terracotta mascarons, noble coats of arms and niches for devotional images. Those who pay attention to façades and details will find different forms of traditional architecture in a single part of town.
The Santuario di GesĂą Bambino di Praga is a basilica with a Latin-cross floor plan and a single nave. Free guided tours last two hours and may include a Mass, explanations about the basilica, an artistic nativity scene, a missionary exhibition, terraces with succulents and views over the gulf. As tour arrangements may change, check the conditions before your visit.
A walk up a hill also offers the chance to visit the Torre dei Saraceni in particular. The tower is considered Arenzano’s only surviving ancient monument. It provides another historic landmark alongside the palazzi and the basilica.
Gardens and Plants in Arenzano
In Parco di Villa Negrotto Cambiaso, there is a glasshouse in the Liberty style, built from glass and iron in 1931. The estate’s history goes back further: in 1558, Marchese Tobia Pallavicino acquired the extensive grounds. He later had a villa built there around a pre-existing tower.
The park’s plants also invite a closer look. Species that are unusual or rare in Liguria include the bald cypress, Erythrina cristagalli, the loquat, the Elegans cultivar of Japanese cedar and the giant arborvitae. In the garden of Villa Figoli des Geneys, by contrast, avenues, palms, evergreen plants and magnolias define the scenery.
Arenzano in the Beigua UNESCO Global Geopark
Arenzano is one of the ten municipalities in the Beigua UNESCO Global Geopark. The geopark encompasses a mountain landscape above the sea, with 26 kilometres of ridgelines, and is one of Liguria’s areas with particularly high geo- and biodiversity.
A Marked Hiking Route
The Arenzano–Curlo–Passo della Gava–Passo del Faiallo route is 9 kilometres long and takes 3 hours and 45 minutes. It is graded EE, for experienced hikers. Its length, estimated time and grade help distinguish this hike from a shorter sightseeing itinerary. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.
Kayaking, Diving and the Marina
Arenzano’s coast offers kayaking routes for exploring the shoreline. Diving off Arenzano offers the chance to explore the Haven, considered the largest visitable wreck in the Mediterranean. Check diving conditions and access locally, as both may depend on the circumstances.
The marina is located in a natural bay and has 185 berths. Support services include nautical and technical facilities. As marina services may change, it is advisable to check their current availability in advance.
Match Your Time to Your Travel Interests
For planning purposes, two very different time estimates can be compared: the guided tour of the Santuario takes two hours, while the marked hiking route takes 3 hours and 45 minutes. Coastal activities such as kayaking and diving also feature, and local conditions play a part in these. This lets you balance culture, nature and activity according to the focus of your trip, without confusing the different offerings.
