Serra Riccò: Hiking Trails, Viewpoints and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Serra Riccò
Serra Riccò brings together paths along ridges and through valleys, viewpoints, historic buildings and festivals with their own traditions. This offers several ways to plan a trip: you can get to know the town through its hiking trails, its landscape or its historical heritage. The destinations mentioned are located in different hamlets and landscapes; the trail connections in particular show how individual places and historic routes relate to one another.
Hiking Trails and Historic Routes
A network of trails runs along the ridge that separates the coastal side from the Apennine side. These trails connect to the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri. For a themed walk, try the Sentiero Botanico di Ciaè: this self-guided nature trail leads to the hamlet of Ciaè, and 47 plant and tree species are identified along the route.
From Orero, a walk leads to Fontanini, where views open out over the Secca Valley and the Casella Valley. The municipal hiking trails from Fontanini connect to the Via del Sale. Valleregia has a different connection: the town lies on the historic Via del Sale. This gives two distinct links to the route—the trails leading on from Fontanini and Valleregia’s location along the historic route.
Landscape and Views
The hamlet of Serra is characterized by pastures, meadows and woods. From the heights above the church, the view extends across the entire Polcevera Valley to the sea. San Cipriano also offers its own viewpoint: from there, you can see across the Secca Valley and the Pontedecimo Valley. The views differ in the landscapes they reveal—from the expansive vista across the Polcevera Valley to the two valleys around San Cipriano.
Buildings, Paintings and Special Places
Castello Parodi is a neo-Gothic building standing on the ruins of an ancient Castellaro. In Pedemonte, the parish church preserves paintings by Giovanni Carlone, Domenico Fiasella and Gian Battista Merano. The Santuario di San Rocco stands at the confluence of the Rio Pernecco and the Torrente Secca. The three places each have a distinct character: Castello Parodi combines a neo-Gothic building with ancient ruins, the paintings are the focal point of the parish church, and the confluence of the waterways defines the sanctuary’s setting.
Festivals and Local Traditions
Since 1982, the Ciaè complex has held the Festa Ruspante every year on May 1. The Festa di San Claro is celebrated on May 4; since 2004, a walk called “Pei Strazzetti de Vojé…” has been organized as part of the celebration. These dates provide clear reference points for planning a trip, while the two festivals mark different occasions in the local events calendar.
Traditional foods are also associated with specific festivals: traditional festivals in Serra feature fritters made according to time-honored recipes, while a fall festival serves roasted chestnuts.
