Neirone combines historical landmarks with a variety of trail themes. Its cultural heritage includes the history of the castle and park at Roccatagliata, churches with their own distinctive historical details, the Mulino di Neirone, and fifteen historic stone bridges. Trails also offer a practical focus for planning your trip: a significant section of the Itinerario dei Feudi Fliscani runs along the Valle del Neirone. If you are choosing a destination based on culture and outdoor activity, you can consider these highlights separately and decide how to prioritize them for your trip to Neirone.

Roccatagliata: Castle and Archaeological Park

The ancient castle of Roccatagliata dates back to the 12th century and was destroyed by the Sforza in 1477. The first reliable evidence of the fortress dates to 1173. The two dates therefore mark different events: the earliest reliable record and the destruction. Roccatagliata’s archaeological and historical park has explanatory information panels. A woodland trail with facilities leads up the hillside and provides access to the park. The site’s history is thus presented not only through historical dates, but also through a park with information panels and an uphill trail.

Churches with Different Historical Layers

The Church of San Maurizio in Neirone dates to the 17th century. Embedded in the outer wall of its rectory is a slate relief of the Agnus Dei, attributed to an unknown stonemason of the 14th century. The church and the relief therefore point to different centuries; the relief’s creator is explicitly unknown. This distinction offers a particular historical perspective on the church: alongside the date of the building is an older work of art with a cautious attribution.

The Church of San Marco d’Urri stands in an isolated location near the old path that climbs from Acqua di Ognio toward Scoffera. It is dated to the years 1567–1603. Its bell tower is the tallest in the entire valley. Here, the location, construction period, and tower offer different points of reference than at San Maurizio: one church stands out for its relief and its different periods of creation, while the other is notable for its position by the old path and the height of its bell tower.

Mill, Landscape, and Stone Bridges

The Mulino di Neirone is one of the last surviving mills in the Val Fontanabuona, and its large mill wheel is still in place. The mill lies amid the Ligurian mountains, in an area of chestnut woods. Two aspects of the place come together here: the surviving mill wheel as a tangible reminder of milling history, and the landscape of mountains and chestnut woods. Its description as one of the last surviving mills refers to the Val Fontanabuona.

Neirone also has fifteen historic stone bridges. They still provide access to inhabited places today. The bridges are therefore not just stone structures; they continue to serve a practical purpose. Their historical significance and present-day use go hand in hand—unlike the churches and the mill, whose distinctive features lie chiefly in their construction dates, artwork, and surviving mill wheel, respectively.

Plan Your Routes and Journey

A significant section of the Itinerario dei Feudi Fliscani runs along the Valle del Neirone. The Sentiero Neirone includes a meadow area for resting, fitness activities, and picnics. These offer different points of reference for planning: the Itinerario is described by its route along the valley, while the Sentiero is noted for the uses of its meadow area. Check local conditions before using the area.

Neirone can be reached by bus from Genoa, Recco, and Chiavari. If you are travelling by bus, check the latest timetables before departure. This will help you plan your journey using the available services.
