Montefino is perched on a steep hill above the Fino Valley. Its fortifications, churches and views from various terraces give the town both historical and scenic significance. The details range from the shape of a gateway to a dated historical purchase.

Fortifications and the Town’s History

The fortification walls enclose a round tower, whose later brickwork incorporates an older stone structure. The fortifications date from the 15th or 16th century. The complex also includes the Porta da pié; its pointed arch provides a different design accent from the round tower. The layers of construction on the tower and the shape of the arch at the gateway are two specific details that offer architectural insight into the fortifications.

One specific historical event is the purchase of the castle of “Montis Sicci” in 1430: Giosia d’Acquaviva, son of Andrea Matteo I and Count of San Flaviano, bought it from the condottiero Iacopo Caldora. The year refers to the purchase of the castle; the fortifications themselves are dated more broadly to the 15th or 16th century. Thus, a precisely dated event sits alongside a broader chronological classification.

Churches and Their Building History

The Church of Madonna del Carmine was built around 1300. Its square bell tower belongs to a later building phase: the lower part was constructed in 1827 and completed in 1860. The church and bell tower therefore have different dates. The church is accessed through the portal on Piazza Madonna del Carmine.

Another church is located in Villa Bozza di Montefino. The Church of Madonna delle Grazie has been documented since 1622 and was renovated at the beginning of the 20th century. Together with Madonna del Carmine, it presents a picture of different historical reference points: an approximate construction date, a documented date, and later work on church buildings.

Alleys, Terraces and Landscape

A walk through the alleys and small squares of the historic center lets you rediscover the character and atmosphere of the past. Various terraces offer panoramic views across the Fino Valley and the surrounding landscape. These are two different ways to experience the town: on a walk, the alleys and squares take center stage, while the terraces open up views across the wider landscape.

Alongside its buildings, Montefino’s cultural character also includes its craft tradition: wicker baskets are made in Montefino, and many older residents take part. This adds a continuing craft practice to the town’s building history. If you are interested in local traditions, it is a distinct aspect of the town, alongside its historic buildings.

Cycling and Getting There

During a mountain bike ride on the Sant’Ilario cycling and walking path, cycling section guides organized and led the outing.

Montefino can be reached by a single road, which is considered winding and quite steep. When planning your journey, you can take these road conditions into account alongside your interest in the town’s history and landscape.
