Colledara combines traces of local history with the Fiumetto Nature Reserve. Churches, remnants of old fortifications and architectural details shape its cultural character; the protected area along the Fiumetto stream offers its own focus on nature and education. The attractions are associated with various places and districts. This lets you give different themes priority on your trip: medieval building history, church art, historic settlements or the paths and facilities of the nature reserve.

Churches and Local History

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo stands on the medieval square in the centre of Castiglione della Valle, a district of Colledara. It dates from the 12th century. Remains of Castiglione della Valle’s old bastion and surrounding walls are still visible. The church and the remains of the fortifications offer different insights into the district’s history. Colledara is also the hometown of the writer Fedele Romani. Alongside the architectural remains, those interested in the town will find a literary connection.

Villa Petto is laid out on two levels, separated by the main square. Santa Lucia stands among the old houses in the historic centre and shows visible traces of the castle fortifications on which it was built. The church contains two Renaissance altars and a valuable holy water stoup dating from 1568. Villa Petto is also home to the Chiesa di San Salvatore, now a ruin. These details make Villa Petto interesting to travellers who want to pay attention not only to the layout of a historic settlement but also to individual buildings and their furnishings.

Other churches offer specific points of reference for exploring building history and architecture. The Chiesa di San Nicola in Vico was rebuilt in 1811. It lies on the road connecting the districts of Vico, Ornano Grande and Forca di Valle. Its stone portal has a flat architrave; two square windows flank it, with a round window above. In Collecastino, the Chiesa di San Rocco probably dates from 1755 and was extensively restored in 1881. Its portal, made entirely of brick, is decorated with small columns and corbels at the sides and a curved architrave. The Chiesa di San Pietro in Bascianella was completed in 1591. The churches differ in age, restoration history and portal design; this does not mean they should be assumed to share a single building history.

Fiumetto Nature Reserve and Planning Your Visit

The Fiumetto Nature Reserve was established in 1990 and covers just over 74 hectares along the Fiumetto stream, near Castiglione della Valle. Numerous paths cross the area, including a Botanical Trail used for guided educational visits. The visitor centre includes a herbarium, a xylotheque, an insectarium and an educational pond; an information board focuses on the fauna of the Fiumetto River. The trails, botanical themes and nature-study facilities offer a different focus from the churches and local history.

The Sagra della porchetta takes place in Colledara in August. If you plan your trip for this month, check the specific event dates in advance. San Paolo is open during the day; check accessibility before your visit. For longer-distance travel, Colledara’s connection to Rome, L’Aquila and Teramo via the A24 motorway is a useful point of reference. The churches, Villa Petto and the nature reserve offer different themes for planning your trip, from historic buildings to a guided educational visit in the protected area.
