Set on the hills of the Province of Teramo, Cellino Attanasio combines a townscape shaped by the Middle Ages with sweeping views across the landscape. The panorama extends to the coast. The municipality’s natural features also include the Calanchi, the springs and the upper course of the Piomba. Cultural history, regional cuisine and annual events add to these impressions.

Medieval Town Layout and Churches

Cellino Attanasio preserves its medieval town layout and sections of the town walls, commissioned by the Acquaviva family in the 15th century. Here, a medieval town plan meets a later chapter in the history of fortifications. The Chiesa di Santa Maria La Nova is a Romanesque building dating from the 14th century. The church contains the tomb of the nobleman Giovanni Battista Acquaviva—a specific historical connection that adds to the significance of the church building.

The former Chiesa di Santo Spirito also reflects change over the centuries: it was built in the 18th century and is now used as a theatre and multifunctional event space. If you are interested in attending an event, check the current programme separately.

Landscape Between Hills and the Piomba

The Calanchi lie in the eastern part of the municipal area, on the border with the municipality of Atri. These distinctive clay slopes give this type of landscape its name. The springs and the upper course of the Piomba offer another connection with nature: they are of local botanical and faunal interest. Together with the panorama extending to the coast, they form a landscape that encompasses both the hillside setting and the river and spring areas.

Festivals and Regional Cuisine

The Fiera Sant’Atanasio is celebrated on 2 May. Another occasion is the Sagra dei cingoli cellinesi, held every year in July. If you would like to plan your trip around the Sagra, check the dates for the relevant year in advance. These two events offer different points of reference for planning your travel dates.

Cingoli cellinesi are a distinctive fresh pasta made with potatoes, flour and water. At the Sagra, they are served with duck sauce. The festival thus links a specific date with a dish whose ingredients and preparation are characteristic of Cellino Attanasio’s regional food culture. Montonico adds a historical wine tradition to this culinary connection: this native white grape variety is associated with the areas of Bisenti, Cermignano and Cellino Attanasio, and was highly prized until the 1930s.

Plan Your Trip and Hotel Choice

Routes by car, on foot and by bicycle are available for reaching Cellino Attanasio. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide what you would like to focus on: local history, landscapes and nature, or one of the events mentioned above offer different starting points for planning your trip. This makes it possible to choose your travel dates according to the topics that interest you most.
