Arsita combines a medieval fortified layout with churches, viewpoints and natural attractions along the Fiume Fino. When choosing where to stay, it may be important to consider whether you mainly want to explore historic architecture, enjoy sweeping views or take a trip to the river’s source. Information about the route and walking time can help you plan a specific outing.

Churches and historic buildings

At the Chiesa di Santa Vittoria, two layers of façade meet: the unfinished 19th-century façade covers an older one, whose portal is still visible. The Chapel of SS Trinità is a partially preserved 18th-century aristocratic chapel. Parts of the 12th- and 13th-century perimeter wall of Castello Bacucco remain. Thus, a covered older façade and preserved fortification walls stand side by side as distinct traces of the past.

The Chiesa Santa Maria D'Aragona probably dates from the 15th century. Inside, a Gothic triumphal arch separates the nave from the apse. A painted terracotta sculpture of the Madonna and Child was made in 1531; it comes from this church and is now kept in the parish church. The church is opened during religious celebrations. Before visiting, check whether access will be possible at your planned time.

Views and the Fino Valley

The two belvederes offer different views. From Belvedere Portanuova, you can see the Gran Sasso massif. From Belvedere Via Roma, you can see almost the entire historic centre of Arsita, as well as the Gran Sasso massif. Both viewpoints therefore share a view of the massif; Via Roma adds a broad view of the town. Arsita’s lanes and low houses overlook the Fino Valley, adding the valley landscape to these perspectives.

The sources of the Fiume Fino lie in a forest at the foot of Monte Coppe and Siella. A marked trail starts in Acquasanta at an altitude of about 750 metres and leads to the sources in roughly two hours. Using around two hours as a guide, you can plan the hike as a separate block of time. The Fino River enables the spread of the river crayfish and the survival of the Italian crested newt; it is therefore also important for local wildlife.
