Nereto combines a medieval-style centre with church art and local traditions. Its themes range from the layout around Piazza Cavour to frescoes and an archaeological remnant, as well as an amateur sporting tradition passed down from generation to generation. This offers different historical and cultural perspectives on the town.

Townscape around Piazza Cavour

The centre of Nereto lies slightly higher than the rest of the town. Its asymmetrical medieval layout extends around Piazza Cavour. Here, “layout” refers to the spatial arrangement of the centre; it describes a different aspect from its slightly elevated position. For travellers interested in urban history, it is therefore not only a single building that matters, but also the structure in which the central square is situated.

Churches and historical evidence

The Chiesa Maria SS.ma del Suffragio has been documented since 1676 and today reflects a 19th-century renovation. Its two separated façades are perpendicular to one another—that is, at a right angle—and both look like main façades. The date and arrangement of the façades therefore offer different ways of understanding the building: its development over time and its exterior form. In the mother church, frescoes by Giuseppe Toscani depict the “Miracle of Our Lady of Consolation”. The octagonal Chiesa di San Rocco was built outside Nereto in the 17th century as a symbolic place of protection against the plague and was reserved for plague victims. The Paialonga hut in Contrada Crocetta is the remnant of a Neolithic dwelling. It points to early residential and settlement history, while church architecture and frescoes represent other forms of historical evidence.

These historical traces span very different periods: the Paialonga hut points to a Neolithic dwelling, San Rocco to the 17th century, and the Suffragio church combines documentation dating from 1676 with a 19th-century renovation. Together they offer different historical reference points—from early living spaces to sacred architecture and a later architectural form.

Traditional customs and local cuisine

“Lancio del Formaggio” is an amateur sporting tradition in Nereto, passed down from generation to generation. The explanations, origins and rules of the game are handed down over time. This distinguishes the custom from a one-off event: the focus is on a game and the knowledge about it passed down through generations.

The Settembrata Neretese includes a tasting of the traditional Abruzzese dish “Capra alla Neretese” in September. If you are planning a trip around this event, check the dates in the current year’s programme in advance. “Tacchino alla Neretese” is also part of the local cuisine. The two names therefore belong to different contexts: Capra alla Neretese is part of the September tasting, while Tacchino alla Neretese belongs to the local culinary tradition.
