Canzano is situated on a hill, with views across the valley below and towards the Gran Sasso mountain range. History, sacred art and craft traditions give the town a distinct cultural identity; a regional dish is also part of its history. If you are looking for a destination with these highlights, Canzano can be explored through its specific buildings, heritage and traditions.

Fortifications and Church Art in Canzano

Remains of the medieval fortification wall have survived. It was built in the 14th century by the Acquaviva family. Another fortification is the Torrione of Canzano: it is circular and dates from the 14th to 15th century. Together, the remains of the wall and the Torrione offer insight into different forms of fortification, although the two do not share the same architectural form.

The churches also reflect different periods. San Salvatore preserves frescoes dating from the 12th to 14th century. The Baroque church of Madonna dell’Alno stands on Colle Castellano; it houses a painting by Pasquale Richi of Montereale, dated 1601. The 18th-century church of the Congrega del Santissimo Sacramento is located in Piazza Rinascimento.

Heritage, Grottoes and Embroidery Tradition

Madonna dell’Alno is also associated with a religious tradition: according to the account, three Marian apparitions took place on 18, 19 and 20 May 1480. The small Chapel of Perdono stands at the site of the first apparition.

A dense network of grottoes extends beneath the historic centre. In the past, they were used to collect rainwater and store food. These former uses show a practical side of the town’s history: water and supplies were collected or stored in the grottoes. The local craft tradition also includes “punto Canzano”, an embroidery technique designed by Editta Serpente. Canzano thus brings together historic buildings and works of art with a named textile craft.

Landscape and Regional Cuisine

The hilltop location shapes the views: from Canzano, you can see across the valley below and towards the Gran Sasso mountain range. This offers a different way to experience the town than its architectural history, which can be explored through the wall, the Torrione and the churches. The landscape and cultural attractions are therefore distinct aspects to consider when choosing a destination.

Tacchino alla canzanese is a dish from Canzano and the surrounding area. It has been prepared there since at least the mid-19th century. This long culinary tradition adds a regional dimension to the history of the town’s buildings and crafts. If local food culture is also a factor in choosing your stay, this dish is a specific part of Canzano and its surroundings to explore.
