When looking for hotels in Mazzocco, it is worth first considering which themes matter most to you: the natural setting of the Riserva Naturale del Borsacchio, winegrowing, or architectural and technological history. Cantina Mazzarosa, the features of the Mazzarosa cellar, and the architecture of Villa Mazzarosa offer different perspectives on the place and its themes. A mountain-bike route adds a sporting perspective to this selection.

Natural Setting and Winegrowing

Cantina Mazzarosa lies in Mazzocco, in the heart of the Riserva Naturale del Borsacchio. The vineyards of Azienda Agricola e Vinicola Mazzarosa Devincenzi are situated on hills at an altitude of about 150 m. The sea is only a few kilometres away, and the Gran Sasso forms the backdrop. Alongside the location of the winery, altitude, coast, and mountain scenery therefore offer different points of reference in the landscape.

The Riserva del Borsacchio was established in 2005 to protect its natural heritage from development. Around 120 plant species occur in the area, including plants that are rare or endangered in Abruzzo. The endangered Kentish plover also finds protected nesting habitat in the reserve. Taken together, the conservation purpose, plant diversity, and nesting habitat illustrate different aspects of the natural heritage: preserving the landscape as well as the habitats of particular species.

Cellar and Architecture

The Mazzarosa cellar combines striking scale with historic features. It houses a wooden barrel with a capacity of 1,000 hectolitres, described as the largest wooden barrel in Europe. The cellar also contains a rare water-powered lift. Its original appearance from the 1860s has been preserved. The barrel, water-powered lift, and preserved design thus represent different aspects: scale, a technological feature, and architectural history.

Villa Mazzarosa adds another architectural highlight. Its floor plan is compact, with four corner sections prominently emphasized. The building has two storeys and a mezzanine. These details make the building’s structure more tangible: alongside its overall form, the emphasized corners and additional level stand out in particular. The villa therefore offers a distinct perspective for exploring Mazzarosa, alongside the cellar’s features.

Surroundings and Tour Planning

Near Mazzocco, the Pineta Mazzarosa features an avenue of stone pines and holm oaks, as well as around a hundred large trees considered natural monuments. The site is not accessible because it is privately owned. This restriction is important when planning: visiting the Pineta grounds is not possible.

A mountain-bike route between Roseto degli Abruzzi and Mazzocco, recorded in July 2019, is 44 km long. If you plan to ride this route, check current road and route conditions before setting out. The route offers a different perspective from the nature and architecture themes; its stated length is also a concrete point of reference for tour planning.
