Serramonacesca brings together Romanesque cultural heritage, historical landmarks and varied natural landscapes. Much of the municipality lies within Maiella National Park. This offers two main areas to explore when planning your trip: the Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella, with its artistic and historical treasures, and the landscapes and natural sites within the municipality. The local area also offers numerous routes for excursions on foot, by bicycle and by car.

Landscapes in the Municipality

The northern part of the municipality features Pliocene clay badlands. Along the Alento River, the waterfalls area includes cascades, small bridges and crystal-clear pools. At Piani di Tarica is a UNESCO-recognized geosite in Maiella Park, which is an example of tropical karst. These places represent different natural features: geological landforms, waterfalls and karst. If you plan your trip around particular landscapes, you can explore these features separately.

Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella

The Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella is one of the most notable examples of Romanesque architecture in Abruzzo. It has a mosaic floor dated to 1275; the abbey also contains an ambo that can be dated to around 1180. A monastic community was already established there around 884. Other historical landmarks include the rock tombs of San Liberatore. These are arcosolium burials dating from no later than the 10th century. The architecture, works of art and early monastic history offer various ways to understand the abbey in its historical context.

Church, Festival and Wildlife Area

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is in the center of Serramonacesca. The ruins of Castel Menardo have preserved almost all of their walls. Thus, the village's history encompasses both the centrally located church and the walls of an old fortress. Each place can be viewed according to its particular significance: Santa Maria Assunta is notable for its central location, while Castel Menardo is known for the almost completely preserved walls of its ruins.

One nature attraction with explicitly stated access arrangements is the wildlife area for deer: it is freely accessible, and the animals can be observed through viewing slits along the perimeter fence. The patron-saint festivals also offer a glimpse into local traditions. They are held on June 12 and 13 in honor of Sant’Onofrio and Sant’Antonio, and include the distribution of bread.
