Musellaro offers two distinct starting points for planning a trip: hiking trails through woodland and cultivated landscapes, and traces of religious and architectural history. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, this overview can help you match the character of the destination to your interests. The landscape features are tied to specific trails and the surrounding area; the church and the fortified complex of houses and a castle reflect the town’s history.

Hiking Trails, Plain and Canyon

The A3 hiking trail from Bolognano to Musellaro first passes through mixed woodland and then, near Musellaro, through olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields. Along this trail, the landscape shifts from woodland to cultivated land. This is a useful reference point if you want to distinguish the different landscapes along a route.

The A2 hiking trail runs from Musellaro to San Tommaso. Along it, the Luco plain is characterized by imposing limestone towers, a dense, centuries-old oak forest and a few cultivated fields. By comparison, A2 has a different focus from A3: here, the plain’s limestone formations and oak forest stand alongside the fields; there, the landscape shifts between mixed woodland, olive groves, vineyards and fields. This makes it possible to distinguish two different landscape features without treating the trails as the same.

Nearby, the so-called “Rapide di Santa Lucia” form the narrowest and most spectacular section of Orta Canyon. The fast-flowing green-blue water has shaped the narrow limestone banks into meanders, waterfalls and potholes. The rapids are also among the Maiella Geopark’s most significant geosites. Unlike the trails through woodland and cultivated land, the focus here is on how water has shaped the canyon landscape.

The area around Musellaro is also rich in springs, including some sulphurous ones. Alongside the trail and canyon landscapes, springs are therefore another natural feature you can consider when choosing your destination.

Santa Maria del Balzo and the Santissimo Crocifisso

Access to the church of Santa Maria del Balzo is through the main entrance on Piazza SS. Crocifisso, 65020 Musellaro PE. The Santissimo Crocifisso of Musellaro is now kept in the church’s chapel. It is the focus of enduring popular devotion and a destination for pilgrimages, especially on 19 September, when its feast is celebrated each year. The church of Santa Maria del Balzo was consecrated in 1213 as Santa Maria del Castello di Musegliero. The coats of arms of the Davalos-d’Aquino families appear on its entrance portal, which is dated 1519. The two dates mark different historical milestones: 1213 is the year the church was consecrated, while 1519 is the date of the portal.

The Fortified Complex in the Old Town

An ancient fortified complex of houses and a castle is located in the old part of Musellaro. Its core is the Palazzo Baronale, also known as Castello di Musellaro. The Castello consists of three buildings with different uses. It is therefore helpful to distinguish the complex as a whole from its central building: the Palazzo Baronale forms the core of the fortified complex.

Another architectural detail is noted on the main façade: a loophole is visible beside the second entrance. Along with the description of the fortified complex of houses and a castle, this feature adds to the picture of the old town. The church and the Castello offer different perspectives on Musellaro: on the one hand, the church’s consecration, the dated portal and devotion to the Crocifisso; on the other, the layout of a fortified complex made up of several buildings.
