Bomba – Lake, Heritage and Monte Pallano
Accommodation in Bomba
Lake Bomba and the historic sites give a trip to Bomba two main focuses: the landscape by the water and the town’s cultural heritage. There is also Monte Pallano, with views across the Sangro Valley to the Adriatic Sea and the peaks of the Majella. If you’re looking for hotels in Bomba, these themes can help you plan your trip.
Lake Bomba and Monte Pallano
Lake Bomba is an artificial lake on the River Sangro. It was created by an earth-fill dam in the municipal area of Bomba. The lake is about 7 kilometres long, an average of 1.5 kilometres wide, and up to 57.50 metres deep. Its dimensions show that the water surface extends much farther in length than in width. Lake Bomba is also an official venue for rowing competitions, adding a sporting role to the lakeside landscape.
Monte Pallano offers both views and outdoor activity. An approximately one-hour walk leads from Bomba’s southern slope to the summit, at an elevation of around 1,000 metres, via a mule track and a hiking trail. Allow about an hour for this route and check conditions before setting out, as they can vary. From Monte Pallano, views extend across the Sangro Valley to the Adriatic coast and the peaks of the Majella. The archaeological site of Monte Pallano lies in the wider area around Bomba and is divided roughly equally between the municipalities of Bomba and Tornareccio; the larger monumental section is in Tornareccio.
Museum and local history
The Museo Etnografico di Bomba was founded in 1990. It displays everyday and work-related objects in six rooms that faithfully recreate a rural house in Abruzzo. This allows visitors to view the collection not only through individual objects, but also in the context of the home setting on display. Visits are often led by older residents of the town. They explain the tools on display and share memories and traditions passed down through generations. Personal stories are therefore as much a part of the museum experience as the objects in its rooms.
In the historic centre, you’ll encounter various examples of the area’s architectural and local history. The Supportico is the main entrance to the historic centre: a covered passage connects to a projecting portal with a round arch. Palazzo Spaventa is a historic building where the brothers Bertrando and Silvio Spaventa were born. The Monumento a Silvio Spaventa stands in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti and is considered a historic and artistic attraction. Palazzo dei Feudatari, meanwhile, occupies a commanding position at the highest point of the historic centre.
Churches and other buildings also reflect different periods and uses. The Church of Santa Maria del Popolo has a Baroque interior with stucco, bas-reliefs, frescoes and medallions. The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate was built in 1526 at the behest of Baron Antonio Annechino. The Fontana di Sambuceto is a rural fountain dating from the 19th century, originally used as a watering place for livestock and a washhouse. These examples illustrate the distinctions between artistic decoration, building history and former everyday functions.
Festivals and cultural venues
Devotion to Saint Mauro at the Santuario San Mauro Abate dates back to the 12th century. The present building was rebuilt between 1954 and 1963. The Sala San Mauro has a different history of use: the restored former church, which has been deconsecrated, is made available for cultural activities. The Cantine–Museo form a visitor route in private spaces in the heart of the historic centre that have been made available to the community.
The festival calendar includes the Feast of Santa Maria del Sambuco, held every year on Easter Monday and featuring a procession. If this festival is important to your travel plans, check the date for the year in question. This will help you place the recurring tradition in time without confusing it with the municipality’s permanent sites and buildings.
