Francavilla Al Mare: Culture, Sea and Good Food
Accommodation in Francavilla Al Mare
Francavilla Al Mare combines historic cultural sites with seaside activities and culinary experiences. When looking for a hotel, these themes can help you decide where to start: would you like to focus on architectural and art history, activities on the water, or wine and food culture?
Cultural history in specific places
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore was built before the year 1000 and declared a national monument on August 5, 2006. The church also houses the Ostensorio dell’Assunta, a work created by Nicola da Guardiagrele in 1413. This brings together a very early church building, a precisely dated work of art and a later designation as a monument in one place.
The Museo Navale Enzo Maio Masci is housed in the historic Torre Ciarrapico. The Palazzo Sirena—now the Sirena Auditorium—has 274 seats and hosts conferences, concerts, theater performances and film screenings. The first building of the Palazzo opened in 1888, was destroyed in 1943 and rebuilt in 1950.
The Convento Michetti connects architectural history with the life and work of Francesco Paolo Michetti. The complex includes the 15th-century Church of Santa Maria del Gesù, remodeled in the 18th century, and a small Franciscan monastery. Michetti bought the monastery in 1885 and turned it into his home and studio; he lived and worked there and welcomed friends and artists. In the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th, one of Italy’s most important cultural circles after unification came together there. The cultural figures who gathered there included Gabriele D’Annunzio and Francesco Paolo Tosti. The convent is privately owned by Michetti’s heirs and can only be visited on rare occasions. Before making plans, ask locally whether a visit is possible.
Sea and activities
The Pontile Sirena was built in the 1960s and extends about 130 meters out to sea from the shore. It offers a distinctive view of the Abruzzo coast and the town skyline. This makes the view of the coast and town a focus in its own right, alongside activities on the sea.
In Francavilla al Mare, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, swimming, SUP and canoeing are among the ways to enjoy the sea actively. The options range from wind-based sports to swimming and paddling. If you are planning time on the water, you can start by choosing the type of activity that interests you.
Wine and food culture
A wine tasting at a winery typically includes a visit to the barrel cellar and vineyard, as well as a tasting of local food. The experience therefore combines wine with a look around the cellar and vineyard, along with other tastings.
The Slow Food Convivium offers another perspective: its active members organize events, dinners, tastings and courses in food education. Alongside wine tastings at a winery, these community-organized events and courses are also part of the area’s culinary offerings.
San Franco and travel planning
The annual feast day of San Franco includes fireworks over the sea. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the current event date and program before traveling.
