Canosa Sannita Between Culture and Wine Trails
Accommodation in Canosa Sannita
In Canosa Sannita, cultural history meets paths through vineyards. The Museo della Guerra per la Pace is housed in Palazzo Martucci, the parish church of San Filippo e Giacomo preserves an ornately crafted 18th-century bust, and the local wine trails start in the town center. Visible caves near the settlement and historic tratturi also give your explorations different points of interest.
Culture and History in Canosa Sannita
The Museo della Guerra per la Pace is housed in the historic Palazzo Martucci. Its collection includes around 1,000 historical objects related to the two wars. This gives the museum a distinctive place in the history of the town. If you are interested in the parish church of San Filippo e Giacomo, you will encounter two different historical connections there: the church was rebuilt after the Second World War and also preserves an ornately crafted wooden bust of Saint Blaise from the 18th century.
Several caves dug into the sandstone are still visible near the settlement. Their history includes having served as refuges for brigands. The caves can therefore be viewed both as striking features of the local landscape and in light of their past use. The Casino di Moggio adds to this picture of rural heritage: this traditional rural building can be found along the signposted routes in the area around Canosa Sannita.
Routes Through Vineyards and the Surrounding Area
The municipality has created the I Sentieri del Vino trail network. The routes begin in the town center and pass through vineyards along paths traditionally used by farmers. Information boards describe local grape varieties such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano, and Pecorino. The routes are marked with numerous signs and are easy to follow; check the condition of the signs before setting out.
Two old tratturi also cross the area around Canosa Sannita: the Tratturo Magno and the Tratturo Centurelle-Montesecco. The section of the Centurelle-Montesecco is described as passing through vineyards, with views of the Adriatic and the Apennines. The two names refer to distinct historic routes through the surrounding area. A short walk from the town center also leads to the Fonte Vecchia. There is also a scenic circular route of about 12 kilometers that you can drive on fully paved roads. This gives you two different options: a short walk and a longer loop specifically described as a driving route.
Both the wine trails and the historic tratturi may help you find your way around, but the features mentioned do not apply to every route: vineyards and information boards about grape varieties are associated with the descriptions of I Sentieri del Vino, while views of the Adriatic and the Apennines are noted for a section of the Tratturo Centurelle-Montesecco. If you would like to combine these impressions, pay attention to which route is being described.
An Annual Tradition
During the annual celebration of Saint Anthony, the Carri di Sant’Antonio parade through the streets of Canosa Sannita. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the dates and program locally. This lets you take the event into account as a special occasion without conflating it with the cultural sites and routes described as available year-round.
