Rocca San Giovanni combines a historic town center with stretches of coastline and trails through the Grotta delle Farfalle Nature Reserve. If you are looking for a hotel, these different highlights can guide your travel planning: architectural history and views, the coast, or nature trails.

History and Buildings in the Town Center

The first documented mention of Rocca San Giovanni appears in a deed dated March 1, 1047, signed by Emperor Henry III. In 1076, Abbot Oderisio I built a defensive wall around Rocca and began construction of the parish church. Sections of the walls, a defensive tower and the bell tower have been preserved and restored.

The Church of San Matteo Apostolo is also part of the town’s architectural character. It has three naves and was built in the Romanesque style. The Palazzo Municipale dates from the 19th century and is designed in the Neoclassical style; the building houses a collection of sculptures, paintings and prints. These buildings represent different facets of the town’s history, from its fortifications to its later civic architecture.

The historic center is characterized by narrow lanes. They run along the Corso to a viewing terrace overlooking the valley below. The lanes, the Corso and the terrace provide clear points of reference for your walk through the town center; the view also opens out from the center onto the surrounding landscape.

Coastal Stretches and Trabocchi

Spiaggia della Foce stretches between the historic hamlet of Vallevò and Punta Torre. The trabocco of the same name stands there. At Spiaggia del Cavalluccio, a trabocco and a large rocky outcrop known as “lo scoglione” define the scene. Each beach is associated with its own distinctive coastal features, but the details described differ: at Foce, the location between Vallevò and Punta Torre and the trabocco; at Cavalluccio, the trabocco and the rocky outcrop.

The Via Verde dei Trabocchi is a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs along the coast from Ortona to Vasto. Separate from this is the stated distance for a walk along the Via Verde of the Costa dei Trabocchi: from Spiaggia Cavalluccio to Trabocco Punta Tufano, it covers 3.3 kilometers and takes about an hour. The figures refer to different routes and scales: around 42 kilometers describes the cycle path between Ortona and Vasto, while the approximately one-hour duration applies to the walk between the two specified points.

Trails in the Nature Reserve

The Grotta delle Farfalle Nature Reserve covers about 510 hectares in the municipalities of Rocca San Giovanni and San Vito Chietino. The reserve lists several trails: L1 “Borgo-Mare,” L2 and L2b “Valle Grande,” and L3 “Grotta delle Farfalle.” The reserve entrance is at Contrada Vallevò 288, 66020 Rocca San Giovanni CH. This makes it possible to distinguish the area, its extent across two municipalities and the specifically named trails when planning a visit.

To reach Pinetina, follow the route along the Strada Statale 16 Adriatica to the hamlet of Vallevò, then continue along the provincial road “Piano dei Marchi.” Check current road conditions before setting out.

Regional Cuisine and Wine

Palazzole is a traditional dish of seafarers’ cuisine. It is made with anchovies or sardines, breadcrumbs, garlic, parsley and extra-virgin olive oil. These ingredients give the dish a clearly defined culinary profile and make it a distinctive part of the local tradition.

Rocca San Giovanni also has two wineries that produce DOC wines from Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo grapes. White wines are a particular focus. Together with Palazzole, these wines round out the picture of local food and wine culture.
