Discover Torricella Peligna: Culture and Maiella Views
Accommodation in Torricella Peligna
Torricella Peligna stands on a high hill at 901 metres above sea level, facing the Maiella and between the Sangro and Aventino valleys. The panoramic view reaches as far as the Adriatic Sea. The historic centre, John Fante’s cultural legacy and routes through the surrounding landscape are central to planning a stay here. You can discover Torricella Peligna on a walk along the main street or on a 20-kilometre route covering a range of themes.
Historic Centre and the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo
In the town centre, a walk along the main street passes 19th-century palaces and leads to the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo and the historic centre. The church gives the walk a tangible link to the town’s long history: its foundation in 1173 is documented in a papal bull issued by Pope Alexander III to the Bishop of Chieti. The church also houses a painting created in 1917 by Elena Tilli, a student of Francesco Paolo Michetti. The medieval record of its foundation and the early 20th-century artwork offer distinct historical perspectives.
The Sanctuary and Fallascoso
The Sanctuary of Madonna delle Rose is a pilgrimage destination on Easter Monday and the last Saturday in May. During the Festa della Madonna delle Rose, Torricella Peligna’s patron saints are carried in procession to the sanctuary. In Fallascoso, a hamlet of Torricella Peligna, you’ll find the hermitage of San Rinaldo, a rural chapel and a grotto at the foot of a large rock face. A steep path, partly lined with steps, leads there.
John Fante: Literature and Festival
The literary festival “Il dio di mio padre” takes place every summer in Torricella Peligna. It is dedicated to John Fante, whose father came from the town. The festival was founded in 2006; since 2008, it has also included the international Premio John Fante literary prize. The programme features conversations with authors, book presentations, readings, theatre and music performances, seminars and panel discussions. Its focus is Fante’s work and biography, as well as themes of intercultural and transnational exchange.
Events at the John Fante Festival are held at the Mediateca John Fante. There, you can consult all the publications in Fante’s collected works, translations into the main foreign languages, and studies by international critics. The festival and the Mediateca offer two distinct ways to engage with the writer: a summer events programme and a collection that lets you explore his work and its reception in greater depth.
Museum and Places of Remembrance
The Museo Civico di Torricella Peligna displays bracelets and fittings dating from the 6th century BC, as well as a rare case of natural, spontaneous mummification. The Torre della Memoria bears the names of 110 sons of Torricella Peligna. These sites complement the town’s literary and religious heritage with archaeological and commemorative themes.
Routes and Local Cuisine
The Sentiero dei Carricini is 20 kilometres long in total and can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. It runs within the two Sites of Community Importance of Pennadomo–Torricella Peligna and Bosco Paganello. In the Sangro Aventino area, the route links Torricella Peligna with Civitaluparella, Montenerodomo and Pennadomo, forming one of four villages. Another route, “Sulle Orme di Sansone”, starts in Torricella Peligna and follows ancient tratturi to the rock church of Madonna delle Rose, then on to the Morgia di Gessopalena. This offers a choice between a 20-kilometre route with three possible ways to travel and a route starting in town and leading to two named destinations.
Local food culture is also connected to the landscape: the gardens around the Fontana delle Coste are used mainly to grow Sedano Nero di Torricella Peligna. This variety of celery is used in regional dishes, jams and pesto-like sauces, paired with porchetta, and even used to make beer. If you’re interested in local food, this offers another way to experience the character of the town, alongside its churches, literature and routes.
